I've been thinking about Neurosis a lot lately, as they are playing a show here in Brooklyn at the end of the month. It got me thinking about the past again.
Growing up in the Bay area metal/punk scene I had the pleasure of seeing these guys play a lot. In my opinion nothing by these guys beats this record, as its their rawest, punkest, grittiest release. Don't get me wrong, I love word... and souls as well, but they are on completely different level production wise.
Pain of mind was a ode to Christ On Parade and Rudimentary Peni , and became a very influential psychedelic hardcore record. Twenty years later, no matter what this band does, punks still find themselves interested.
The last time I saw Neurosis was at Christ On Parade's supposed last show at Gilman street in around 1990-1991. A riot broke out after a confrontation between Ben Econochrist, the audience and a bunch of San Jose Nazi skinheads. I remember Nuclear Roach, Econochrist, and Neurosis all got to play, but the band I had flown out to see wouldn't get to play their last show.

I actually had this album kept safe along with my other valuable punk/hardcore/thrash/speed/etc etc vinyls.. but apparently I was dead wrong. I really loved this album too. Thanks for putting it up! Lots of really rad memories listening to this
ReplyDeleteThank you. Great post yet again. I've been wanting to investigate this band further as lots of bands I'm into reference them as an influence.
ReplyDeleteMike~
ReplyDeletesorry about your records... that is a nightmare to me. Nate
Are you going to the show in Brooklyn? They're playing two nights (Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th). I have my ticket for Friday and I am really looking forward to it. It's kind of strange how much they've changed, but they have been consistently good their whole career.

Thanks for this- what a great record this was. And Chris, while you're checking this out, be aware that Neurosis sounds very little like this anymore - still a great band, but certainly different.
ReplyDeletewe talked about that show when christ on parade played at gilman recently.
ReplyDeletethey finally their "last show" at gilman, after all these years.
I just stumbled onto your site yesterday and was very impressed. Thanx for sharing all this great music. I added your site to my links, check out mustard-relics.com and see if you might add me to yours. I know mine's pretty random but maybe you'll like a song or two. I got pain of mind on tape from a buddy when it first came out. Some of the best stuff the bay had to offer. I was living in Humboldt at the time. Lots of stuf to share with you, thanx again for all your great posts.
ReplyDeleteI have a "request" if you happen to own it - the first TT Quick EP on Megaforce. I've been waiting for that to be issued on CD forever and I just don't think it's going to happen. GREAT record- not a fan of their other Lps, but that first one is great. If you have it...
ReplyDeletePlanet of terror~
ReplyDeleteI have that TT Quick 12" at my parents back in Albany. I'll look for it next time i'm back there. I loved the simple cover art for that. back then I bought EVERYTHING on megaforce.

I think the shows are sold out...
Friday is, but Thursday is still up. Try for it.

ReplyDeletethis is classic, but i really dig Word as Law. the first time i saw them was 1992 on souls at zero and even back then, they did NOT play ANY old songs.
Jim Mac likes word as law best as well buddy. I think my order is pain, souls, then word.
ReplyDeleteafter that I'm no longer interested in them.
I once owned this on vinyl. I think it came out on Alchemy records. The 7" they did on Lookout was amazing as well. Hard to imagine that these gus are still going.
ReplyDeleteDid they play in NY yet?
thanks for bringing me back to th'ol dayz Nate
Anyone recall Violent Coercion? pre Neurosis. I used to have the 10 song demo tape. I bought it when I saw them at the new method in around 1885, or 86. I forgot about them until I read this post. thanks again Nate

does the back cover art read "alchemy...southern records?" thanks. i look forward to your answer.
ReplyDeleteI produced this LP in 1987. Glad to see some fans finally giving it a small afterlife on the web. I was initially against signing the band to Alchemy to do an LP because I felt they could have benefited from more live and touring experience that would reflected in their recording performances. My partner at Alchemy convinced me that we should go ahead and so we recorded the band in a studio that was a converted garage to 1" 16 track. Everything went down live except for the vocals, and possibly a few overdubs. There were some major problems with the intonation of the guitars, one of which was home repaired-the neck was literally reglued back on after breaking. In retrospect, the microtonality that resulted only added to the overall sense of anarchy and rage captured in those performances. We mixed to an early form of digital, a pcm recording on to vhs tape. That also added a particularly abrasive top end that was not altogether intentional, but somehow appropriate.
ReplyDeleteThe record came out to generally good reviews, and has even apparently achieved somewhat of a classic reputation. I was glad to have been part of it, and it always raises an eyebrow when people find out I produced the first Neurosis LP.
Just a short note about Violent Coercion. My band Clown Alley played a lot of shows with them and I really liked their demo also. Alchemy was seriously interested in doing something with them, but it just never worked out. Great band. Great demo, if you can find it !
I bought this album by mail order direct from Alchemy when it first came out, after reading rave reviews in MRR and the like. Needless to say I was not disappointed. Neurosis' newer stuff is also great, but they will never top this one, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most mind-blowing albums ever. Thanks a million for putting it up.
I really liked your blog and would like to know more about the topic
