Years before any one else was calling themselves Terror, these guys were playing as Terror.  I know very little about these Japanese thrashers.  My old Albany friend Louis J gave me this one back in the early 1990's.  All he said was "enjoy this Japanese rarity".   He was the first guy I'd ever met who went balls out collecting Japanese punk hardcore records.  It was like an addiction for the guy.  Even back in 1989 he was sometimes paying $75 for records that I thought he was insane for buying.  Turned out he was way ahead of his time.
The record is chock full of speed and blur.  I'd say they were influenced by the likes of SOB, Outo, Gauze, etc.  The vocals are what make this for me.  I love the Totally raw recording on this ep.  The songs are all like 3-4 mins long, but the only one with any metal influence that I'm here is "no see mine".  The others are all raging hardcore tunes with some cool breakdowns to boot.  Enjoy.

Here is some more Western Mass hardcore for you.  As stated in the Outpatients post before this, I mentioned I saw these guys in a basement with G-Man.  Wishful thinking blew me away live.  Total straight edge youth crew, but a bit more harsh sounding then say youth of today, etc.  I'd say Wishful thinking were influenced by lots of straight edge(duh...Minor threat for sure), but mixed in the speed and rawness of other bands from their area(Deep Wound, Siege, Outpatients, etc).  After I'd seen them, and got the 7" I tried to turn on the Albany folks I started to meet in the scene.  Albany was sorta weird though.  A very Straight edge, New York hardcore mentality existed here.  If it wasn't from NY, it wasn't of interest to about 80% of the scene.   Dudes in Albany who wanted to book, SNFU, Victims Family, Operation Ivy, and bands that weren't "hard" or "straight" had to book Judge, Token Entry, Super Touch, Sick Of It All, YOT, Breakdown, GB, etc. to get kids to come out to shows.  It was weird.
Years after seeing these guys, and getting the 7" from my Western Mass connection, I'd met, and become friends with the singer of Wishful thinking.  Mark Dargie, one of the nicest guys ever.  I think I met him selling his record collection at a show.  He's still around, and semi hip to whats going on.  Download this...nine ragers on this 7" ep slab.

Substance were originally called Hard Times and were from the Albany NY area(Troy, Clifton Park and Albany). They of course were heavily influenced by the Cro-mags, and used to play Cro-mags covers. Unfortunately Substance never did a record. Members went on to play in All Fall Down, Cutthroat, and Stigmata. Buddy the guitarist was/is a swell dude who sort of transcended between the "hard" mosh scene, and the dorky, more "elitist" hardcore kids. Things were pretty divided back then, and in my opinion he helped to challenge that by just being a great guy and not giving a shit about what others thought or were into. Although at first many of my peers weren't so into Substance because of scene politics, and the heavy mosh factor these boys brought to shows, I think people eventually learned to love em for being good dudes and speaking up at shows when shit went wrong. My favorite track ever by them is "sea of fear" which was on a compilation. I had to upload this demo because listening to it had me thinking about home and the holidays. Enjoy.

I pulled this one out of my record collection to listen to over the weekend, because I thought of them after listening to the Nazi Dust 7" ep(a new release). After listening to the ND ep I was like.. this reminds me of Void and maybe some Subverse. So I dug out the Subverse ep to see if my memory was correct. It wasn't really. The vox are sorta similiar, and some of the riffing, but Subverse have a sound that goes from thrashing hectic hardcore, to some slower Amebix type parts. At any rate think RKL meets Amebix.
The band was from Vancouver Canada. I was first introduced to them by the split LP that they did with Desecration. I bought the record for the Desecration side, thinking it was the California metal band who later morffed into Corrupted Morals.
These songs are fucking awesome...everything about this stuff rules. The vox, and the drums especially. Enjoy.

Here is some more killer, under the radar thrash metal. This three piece band was formed by two brothers, in the Netherlands in 1987. Unfortunately They never recorded a LP or anything after this 7".
I found my copy in a used bin at some flea market on my first trip over to Europe, when the band I was in at the time(the Oath)toured over there. I think I paid a Guilder for it(before the Euro, so it was about .50 cents). I recall being pretty excited to get the record home(back to the U.S.)to listen to it.
I love the guitar sound, and the vocals on this one. It really is just straight up, no nonsense, no thrills thrash metal. If anyone has other info, or a demo by these guys I'd love to hear more about it. Enjoy!

I'm pretty sure I got my copy of this Japanese hardcore slab from Pushead. This was back When he was actively doing his label, and had contacted Devoid Of Faith to do a record. We'd spend time on the phone talking about records and hardcore. He was surprised that I didn't have this one, and said he had numerous copies.
I'd randomly get packages from the dude with cool records, posters, stickers, etc. It was always a great surprise. My buddy Jim who was the singer bassist of DOF, got a DOF/pushead sweater with the DOF pushead art from the guy. This thing was Limited to only 4 made. So amazing...
This is a solid release that came out on Temple Of Love(Fear Of God, Hellbastard, etc). The label was an innovator, and for me right up there with the likes of Slap A Ham, and Off The Disk for putting out extreme, underground hardcore. Enjoy.

This is not as awesome as the debut from these Australian thrashers. This stuff is highly influenced by "master of puppets" and the fame and attention that Metallica was receiving at the time. Sort of disappointing back then... but I can really appreciate it more today. The riffing is really catchy and killer.
There are only 4 songs on this 12", and "voyage" is the only studio song, while the other 3 songs are supposedly live. All the songs later appeared on the "face of despair" LP. Any thrasher should definitely listen to "mayhemic destruction" first. You can find it in the archives of this blog.
I grabbed this one at Music Shack in Albany. It was somehow filed in the Rap/singles section. Yeah I know.. what was I doing in that section? Back then I was getting into P.E., NWA, Too Short,, the Ghetto Boys, etc. Finding this one probably snapped some sense into me that day, and got me out of the rap section.

I bought this gem at the Music Shack in Albany in 1990. My friend Roger Van Dusen who was a die hard, elitist type political punk guy who pretty much hated metal was eying this one because of the cool looking sci fi cover art work... and because the LP was on Peaceville(which started off as a crust punk label). Somehow Roger convinced me to buy it. Dude lived next store to me on State street so he came over and listened to to the slab. I think it was the first metal album he'd ever heard that he actually could admit to liking. The next time I saw Rog he had laid out the cash for this "import", and was admitting to becoming fond of certain types of metal.
This was another record/band that was highly influential to me and the music I was playing in the early days of Mx, and even DOF to an extent.
Paradise Lost put out a few records after this one that I dug, but after a while they sort of went the Metallica route of sucking ass. What was great about these guys was that they never really blasted, or played brutally fast... they just chugged along nice and slow in a doomy sorta way, that made it easy to nod your head to.

Okay, I'm finally getting settled in my new castle, and have started to unpack stuff... this one popped up in a box, and got me thinking.
These were originally recorded in two different sessions in 1987 and 1988 with the almighty Lee Dorrian on vox. Everyone knows he was part of ND's best line up. I don't think I had heard these sessions until maybe 1990. My friend Devon Cahill who later went on to form Monster X with me, and then later played in Dropdead used to work at the Ben and Jerry's on Lark Street in Albany NY. You could be hanging out around Albany back then, walk into Ben and Jerrys and hear this master piece blasting loud over the stereo system. It was hilarious to see Dev behind the counter with a tie dye shirt on blasting this shit, smiling, and scooping ice cream. I can remember this one, and Some Bolt Thrower as well. Not sure how the regular customers stomached the tunes, but it was on heavy rotation for sure.
At any rate I've had this tape for almost 2 decades, it sounds great blasting loudly! This band def influenced stuff that Monster X did.

Intruder were from the Southern United States(Nashville Tenn), and put out a few good records(and some clunkers as well). This is their second one, and by far my favorite. Although its not the most original thrash/speed metal record in the world, it sure is tight and easy to listen to because its just fucking awesome. The production is awesome, the lyrics are awesome, the guitars are awesome. You can hear the likes of Violence, Testament, Legacy, Exodus, Death Angel, even some Slayer riffs. I think the guitar solo's are what captured my attention with this Record. I wish I'd gotten to see this bros back in the day. They really did have the Bay Area vibe going for them in their sound.
My friends and I used to giggle and joke about how we'd imagine them talking to the crowd with a southern "twang" in between songs. Yeah, we were dumb, stoned and bored. I do think the version of "Stepping stone" that they do on here is ridiculously hilarious.
The record is a concept album based on the concept of Professor Fritz Huber's statement that "In no future war will the military be able to ignore the use of poisonous gas, It is A higher form of killing". This statement was made upon him receiving the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1919. Dude was a Pioneer in Gas warfare. Anyway, Listening to this record,and the song Martyr got me thinking of 911 tonight. It was pretty hard to avoid with all that hoopla in the city today. The Albums concept has much to do with terrorism.

There are only Three songs on this 12"ep, but they're all special if you're a die hard Sodom fan. Ausgebombt is done in German here, and the vocals done this way really make this sound punk as shit. The song originally came out on the agent orange LP, but was done in English there, so this is a little treat. Next up is "don't walk away" which is a Tank cover, and also sounds different from the LP version. Last up is an excellent live track, that is spot on, and sounds like a metal fueled blur. You know... a whirlwind, the way Sodom usually sound.
This Band were gods to me in the 1980's along with Destruction, and Kreator. listening to them gets me thinking about high school and how much I hated every aspect of it. Bands like this helped to create an escape for me.
