MONSTER X Live At CBGBs (1997)
A gig that happened around 20 years ago. I found this flyer and tape of both Spazz and Monster X while picking through some of my basement crap. The tape is a recording from the board. This CBGBs show was insanely packed, with a very "diverse" crowd due to the strange line up. One emo band would play and a bunch of kids from outside would run in while they played. A more brutal band would play and the emo kids would go outside while the other kids came in. Tyler King put this one on. I recall him talking to me as we were loading in about him getting a cease and desist letter from a lawyer from another Monster X band. I laughed and told him we got those every month. Tyler ripped it up and obviously let us play. Some highlights for me were having Danny Lilker (Anthrax, SOD and Brutal Truth) come up to me after our set and tell me how much he dug us and loved the cover of straight ahead that we did. Also meeting Timojhen Mark face to face and him telling me that he flew out to see us from Cali. Listening to Chris Kellys between song banter ragging on all the emo bands playing. Hilarious... It sure was a strange line up. I would love to see the MX set come out as a live LP. Get at me if you have interest i n putting it out. Someday I'll post the Spazz set.
Set is separated into 2 sides, both sides are larger wav files

MONSTER X- Live at WRPI (1996)
1.Massada/Will To Die
2.We'll Make More
3.The Machine
4.The Gift
5.Your Mistake
6.Battle Fatigue
7.Poisinous Solution
8.Take A Walk
9.Frustrated Existence
10.No Need/Leap Of Faith
11.It's Time/Shorty
Back in the 90's my buddy and band mate (from Devoid Of Faith) Jim MacNaughton did a radio show on WRPI in Troy NY. He also helped to book punk hardcore bands to play live on the air to a room full of friends and supporters. It was a cool little thing the folks at the station would let Jim do. It was mainly Jim, this guy Bob Curry who did sound, and a Japanese girl who went to school there named Akimia. I saw so many cool shows there by the likes of Oi Polloi, the Gaia, 9 Shocks Terror, Los Crudos and endless other bands. Both the bands I was playing in at the time were lucky enough to get to play some of these gigs.
This is a recording of a set that my old band Monster X did at the station. There were probably ten people there to watch us. I think the recording came out great (although the bass guitar is way to low). We actually released the recording on cassette limited to somewhere between 25-50 copies. Enjoy!

DISCHARGE-Live at the Farm in S.F. Sept 7th 1986(getting heckeled))
This tape being uncovered I owe to my friend Kevin 'O who I gave the only copy to well over twenty years ago. He was nice enough to save it, and recently sent it back to me. My guess is that if I would have kept it, it would be lost in a sea of tapes, or given away to someone else. I wish I still had the Possessed, and A.A. sets from the gig on tape... they are lost in a sea of tapes for sure.
The tape is from 1986 at the Farm in SF. It was the last show Discharge played after touring the U.S.A. on a their sell out LP. I had no idea that they had put out a bad record, and were touring on it, so me hearing them sounding like this was a complete shock. I was ready to hear the classic Discharge... I can be heard talking to another dude standing next to me about how they sound worse then Ratt, and wondering if anyone from the Orig lineup is even in the band. They really were horrible, and within the first song you can hear the crowd chanting fuck you. Within 10 mins in they give up playing, and for the next 30 mins, random dudes come out on stage to yell at the crowd, and tell them the cops are coming, and that we are closed minded assholes. Andy Anderson(Attitude Adjustment), and Scotty Verbal Abuse are some of the randoms talking the crowd down. Seriously a great memory. The entire farm chanting DRI, DRI, DRI, DRI...In hopes that DRI who had opened would come back out and play. Turns out that when Discharge came back out to give it another go, DRI walked up with a trash can full of garbage and threw it at the band. Members of the band were actually crying because of the reaction. Years later My friend Jim MacNaughton told me he saw them at La'Mar or something in NY, and the same thing happened. That would have been at the beginning of the tour. Hard to believe they toured like this. The recording was done on a little walkmen type tape player, but sounds awesome. There are only a few songs played, most the time of this tape is the great banter by roadies, and SF scene dudes. Pretty sure nothing else in the world exists like this. Enjoy the download

NO OUTLET-demo tape(1987)
1.first glance
2.last time
3.just how it goes
4.push back
5.know yourself
6.abuser
7.have a say
8.no outlet
9.thanks
Its been a while, I know. I've been slammed with work and some family stuff(having a baby soon). I'll try to get some stuff up on here this summer for sure.
No Outlet were a Straightedge HC band from the Albany NY area(actually a really nice suburb of Albany called Guilderland). They Played many Local shows. My friends and I once even traveled to the Anthrax in Connecticut to catch them with Our Gang.
What I recall most about them live was the singer Marty pacing back and forth on the stage, always looking pretty intense & excited. Dude was huge, but always was smiling. I think the last show I saw No Outlet play was with Token Entry in 1990(or maybe it was Verbal Assault?), after that they sorta just faded away. No last show or nothing that I recall. The band was supposed to release a 7" on Combined Effort(Life's Blood, Absolution). Dave Stein who ran C.E. was living in Albany, and booking these guys on many local shows back then. Not really sure what happened to the plans of the ep, my guess is that it just didn't happen after Dave moved back to NYC, and members went away to college. The last time I saw vocalist Marty was in 1991 at larkfest wearing a Paula Abdul T shirt.
Its really a shame these guys never released a record. Vinnie over at Blogged and Quartered is talking about cleaning up the demo, adding the two tracks from the Albany HC comp 7", and even throwing in a live set. Vin always does a bang up job, so expect it to sound much better then this rip.
I took this photo at the Eagles Lodge
in Schenectady NY in either 1989 or 1990

CUT THE SHIT-demo tape(2002)
1.get rowdy
2.life of misery
3.at what compromise
4.we are not friends
5.down the hatch
Not a lot to say about this one, as I've already talked much about Cut The Shit catalog and my relationship with these heroic thrashers. read the post below for more info. This is the first thing I'd ever heard by them, and it lead me to ask them to do a record. Use the Search function to find the "harmed and dangerous" LP on this blog. Enjoy

SUBSTANCE-demo (1989)
1.suppressed
2.in touch
3.breaking through
4.pressure point
5.over the top
6.draw the line
7.build up
Substance were originally called Hard Times and were from the Albany NY area(Troy, Clifton Park and Albany). They of course were heavily influenced by the Cro-mags, and used to play Cro-mags covers. Unfortunately Substance never did a record. Members went on to play in All Fall Down, Cutthroat, and Stigmata. Buddy the guitarist was/is a swell dude who sort of transcended between the "hard" mosh scene, and the dorky, more "elitist" hardcore kids. Things were pretty divided back then, and in my opinion he helped to challenge that by just being a great guy and not giving a shit about what others thought or were into. Although at first many of my peers weren't so into Substance because of scene politics, and the heavy mosh factor these boys brought to shows, I think people eventually learned to love em for being good dudes and speaking up at shows when shit went wrong. My favorite track ever by them is "sea of fear" which was on a compilation. I had to upload this demo because listening to it had me thinking about home and the holidays. Enjoy.

KIDS FOR CASH-demo tape(1985)
1.know-nothing
2.why?
3.social alcoholic
4.society
5.don't have to fight to be a man
6.stepping stone
7.I can
I haven't posted in months. I've been busy working, and trying to enjoying the summer, my marriage, record collecting and volunteering at a no kill Animal shelter here in NJ.
Some of you may recall that I posted the Kids For Cash 7" some years ago on here.
I got this one from the guitarist of Kids For Cash years ago who found the tape in a box in his basement. Sohrab now lives in Brooklyn NY. When I first heard the demo I told him that it totally reminded me of 7 Seconds. His response was that he recalled the band trying to find a Nexus between the first Scream LP and 7 Seconds the Crew. I think that When you listen to this it totally makes sense. What also comes to mind is an old Albany NY band called Glee Club who early on had a very similar sound. Enjoy this one, It makes me feel elderly.

LEPROSY-demo tape(1988)
1.vomit from hell
2.generation of frustration
3.keep it to yourself
4.speak up/corp dad
These dudes were from Hopewell Junction NY, and played a fast crossover style. I'm not really sure about the bands history other than the singer(Sean), who went on to sing in Collapse(New Breed Tape compilation), and later was the replacement singer for Life's Blood. I think he played two or three shows. This is a serious obscure classic here. Thanks to Charles for this one. Enjoy... and if you know anything about them, please leave it in the comment section.

DIATRIBE-aftermath demo tape(1985)
1.free the animals
2.glorious war
3.games
4.aftermath
5.I'm your leader
6.hellish inferno
7.the slaughter
8.one struggle, one fight
This came out the year I graduated high school. A crushing hardcore classic for sure that had the musical influence of Discharge, and took the political views of Crass, Chumbawamba, etc. I wasn't aware of two many animal rights bands back then, it was sort of a radical idea for sure. The tape made the rounds in the tape trading community for over 20 years. It was an obscure beaut that prolly had more influence on bands over seas then it did over here in the U.S.(until more recently I guess). I had a tape copy dubbed from my buddy Louis, who mainly loved anything from outside the states. He loved these guys even though they were from California. The tape disappeared years ago when in a move, I probably gave it away to a friend. Thanks to Charles for this one. The o.g. tape came from him along with a letter from the band, and lyric sheets.

EXPLODING CORPSE ACTION demo tape (1995)
1.target earth
2.astrogoth
3.decompression
4.astral vortex
5.entombed in space
6.paricalized
7.satan's curse
8.robotic surgery malfunction
This demo is pretty fucking brilliant. It was recorded on a 4 track recorder by Jason Martin.
ECA played grind/death stuff that was influenced by the likes of Carcass, and Fear Of God. They used sci fi themes, and came up with cool fictional names for the band members. In reality The band consisted of one of my best friends, Devon Cahill whom played in Monster X with me, then he want on to replace Lee as the bass player in Dropdead. Also in the band, writing some pretty brutal guitar hooks was Jim Kopta, who is no longer with us. The dude passed away at a way to young age. Jim was a very talented musician and artist who was also in Hail Mary, and the Browncuts Neighbors. Albany has always been a pretty incestuous scene for band people.
At any rate ECA did a split 7" with another local band called Dead Baby. From What I recall the Corpse had a full length LP that was supposed to be released on the Armageddon Label. for some reason this never happened, and there is a full LPs worth of unreleased stuff that has never seen the light of day. The production to that stuff is superior to this. Enjoy.

SEPSISM severe carnal butchery demo(1994)
1.Sadistically Mangled And Devoured
2.Sodomizing The Exhumed
3.Vulgar Strangulation
4.Removal Of Putrid Entrails
5.Blistering Burnt Mutilage
Sorry to the die hard punks that follow this blog... But I'm on a heavy death, grind kick lately. I'll post some hardcore punk soon.
In the early 1990's I did a 'zine called "Gloom". It later spawned my record label, Gloom Records.. My buddy/band mate Jim MacNaughton and I would at times do split zines... he did Dressed To Oppress, which was a really good read, and always got chuckles out of me. It was more a punk/hardcore zine, while Gloom was more a metal zine. At any rate doing the zine some how got me on a list where I was getting regular stuff for reviews from Metal bands/labels. It was actually over whelming, and had me receiving far to much crap. The zine had gotten good reviews in metal maniacs, and I became flooded with mail, and had to print up hundreds of copies of the crap 'zine. At any rate Sepsism were one of the bands that regularly sent me their tapes. I think this is the second one I got from them. They did a total of three demos before releasing a "legit" release. I loved the band straight away because of their gruff low vocals that made you just want to mimic what the dude was howling. This stuff is very tight, and low end sounding. Jim would make fun of this style calling it "cookie monster vox". This one is for fans of early 90's death metal. Enjoy..

23.walls/raging in hell
24.conform or die/sob
Okay, I'm finally getting settled in my new castle, and have started to unpack stuff... this one popped up in a box, and got me thinking.
These were originally recorded in two different sessions in 1987 and 1988 with the almighty Lee Dorrian on vox. Everyone knows he was part of ND's best line up. I don't think I had heard these sessions until maybe 1990. My friend Devon Cahill who later went on to form Monster X with me, and then later played in Dropdead used to work at the Ben and Jerry's on Lark Street in Albany NY. You could be hanging out around Albany back then, walk into Ben and Jerrys and hear this master piece blasting loud over the stereo system. It was hilarious to see Dev behind the counter with a tie dye shirt on blasting this shit, smiling, and scooping ice cream. I can remember this one, and Some Bolt Thrower as well. Not sure how the regular customers stomached the tunes, but it was on heavy rotation for sure.
At any rate I've had this tape for almost 2 decades, it sounds great blasting loudly! This band def influenced stuff that Monster X did.
Enjoy.

This was compiled and put together mostly by David Hayes of Very Small Records at the MR&R house back in 1987, prior to when he started releasing records. Most of the stuff is taken from the bands demo's, live sets, etc. My Friends/neighbors Eric and Janis asked me if my band the Romper Room Rejects wanted to appear on a compilation tape. I of course said yes... the band recorded one track that I wrote called "challenger". I was stoked to later on get a copy of the hand made tape, and see that my favs Corrupted Morals and Rabid Lassie were also on the tape. I couldn't have asked for much else back then. The tape comp was enough to kick us in the ass enough to motivate us to record a demo at Gilman street later that year. Not much became of that, we just gave it to some friends, and sold a few copies through the mail and at shows. I upped that demo a few years ago... for some reson it doesn't come up in the search function. Here is the url. (http://truepunkmetal.blogspot.com/2007/05/romper-room-rejects-demo-1987.html)
All the bands on this tape were bands that you would see around town playing in either S.F. or Berkley during 1986-1988. The stand outs for me on here are Rabid Lassie, Corrupted Morals, Basic Radio(who were pre Operation Ivy), Touch Me Hooker, NoFX, Soup, and Stikky.
Skin Yard sound like David Lee Roth era V.H. I hated it then, but sorta dig it now.
This tape is 22 years old now, and sounds pretty great. There is a dropout in the first song by Forethought, but otherwise the tape is pretty right on. Listening back to this makes me realize once again how lucky I was to be in the Bay Area, and involved in the "scene" during this time period.

PORN ORCHARD keep that pretty smile demo tape(1987)
01.sunday sounds good
02.devil door
03.don't change the sheets
04.desperate formula
Yup, Porn Orchard started off as a punk band that recorded a shit load of demo tapes and toured the states pretty much non stop in the 1980's. These guys were from Athens Georgia, and it seemed you could come across their demo reviews, and ads in all the punk zines of the time. I think I first recall reading about them in Suburban Voice.
I got this demo from friend/and band mate Jim Mac from Devoid Of Faith. Jim was the bassist/vocalist of DOF. He was also the driver/owner of the van that DOF toured around in, so Jim also controlled the music. He would force us to listen to way to much Mojo Nixon, Poison Idea, Johnny Cash, GG Allin, Discharge, and yup I can recall this Porn Orchard tape being on endless rotation as well.
The demo is the 3rd from the band who started in around 1985. It was recorded on a 4 track in the bands house. Enjoy!

PSYCHO zany adventures demo(1986)
01.lies
02.military mind
03.no way
04.no one rules
05.meat market
06.bondage
I saw Psycho in Albany in 1989 with Sheer Terror and Stigmata. Pretty sure that when I saw Psycho these guys they had lost the singer, and were a three piece perhaps? I recall the drummer by this time was wearing a head phone set with a microphone that allowed him to sing and play drums at the same time. It was a weird thing to see a hardcore band do. I was sorta turned off at first when I saw them setting up, but once they started playing their wacky brand of fierce thrashcore I knew they were awesome. I bought their record at the show due to their speed and tightness. I recall the Troy kids who came to the show sorta standing there and not knowing how to react to Psycho.
After the show my friends who put on the show went to pay the bands, and were short the guarantee that Sheer Terror were promised. S.T. got pissed and started saying stuff like "Why don't we ask your mommy for the money". They got pretty demanding, and if I recall correctly drove my buddies to an ATM so that they could be payed what they were promised. The entire episode was pretty hilarious.
The second song on this tape sounds like a different band(different vox, and poppy sorta). The other songs are killer thrash songs that sorta remind me of Poison Idea vocally.
I left off the live side of this tape.

05.the innocent one
06.my twisted mind
07.no escape
08.beneath closed eyes
09.inside outro
DAM(Destruction And Mayhem) were one of the better English thrash metal bands. Unfortunately they missed the boat by about 6 years, and were playing pretty typical speed/thrash metal years after its popularity. Kind of cool I guess as they weren't worried about trends I guess, and wanted to just play speed metal? I think most metal heads at this time were sort of getting more into death metal, sort of leaving the thrash scene to rot away for a while. When I listen to this I hear Testament, Flotsom and Jetsom, Defiance, post Baloff Exodos, and second tier German stuff like Vendetta.
This is the sort of stuff that gets me thinking about my high school metal buddies and me, listening to stuff that sounded like this in a car rides to house parties, where we would later destroy homes, steal booze, then leave to party amongst "our own kind". Listening to this has erupted those memories. Just sort of funny that this stuff came out 6 years after I graduated(when I was no longer doing that shit).
This post is dedicated to one of my best friends as a teenager, Gene Koreman Who I hitch hiked, drank with, smoked with, played music with, and fought with.... Gene lost his mother yest. She was an awesome lady, and let me hang out their home as though it was my own house. She was always filled with good advice. RIP

This is a perfect demo tape. Seriously, not a clunker on it. I've been tripping on this one for many years, and It's just shocking to me that this demo is just a demo, and that it never became a full length LP. This stuff blows away 50% of the punk that was coming out in 1985, and 90% of what is coming out today. This tape is just chuck full of Eighteen generic hits. Perfect thrash played by these Florida punks. The songs are frantically played, but filled with hooks galore that just make you hum along like you've heard these rippers before(you have, its generic in that good way). I uploaded the bands 7" quite a while ago on here, and have been blasting both that and this demo a lot lately. The rip I did is missing the last three tracks.
I was lucky enough to acquire this tape from my good 'ol buddy Jim MacNaughton many moons ago. I think Jim got the tape when his old band Affirmative Action toured the U.S. and played with No Fraud in Florida? Whatever the case, its been a while since I've seen this dude, so thanks Jim, I'll see you at Devon's wedding bro.

SYMPHONY OF GRIEF-demo tape(1993)
01.infernal creation
02.assimulation of souls
03.cerebral hemorage
I bought this one on a whim in Long Island on a record shopping spree I was on with my buddies Artie and Ron.
The band as you could probably guess play a pretty awesome style of doom/death metal. Most the songs are played heavy and slow, with some sudden bursts of speed thrown in here and there. I'd say they are a pure mixture of Incantation and Grief. Semi Obscure shit for sure, these dudes were from Riverside NJ. This is their second demo, they also released a few 7"s, but broke up in around 1996. Cool stuff for sure.
