When I re listened to Helstar I heard lots of Omen, a touch of Maiden, and even a c hair of Riot. This Texas metal band has forever been overlooked within the metal scene. I think they were another band that was sorta stuck between the power metal and speed metal scene of the mid eighties. We, the kids were sorta looking for stuff that was faster, heavier and sicker in every way shape and form. Things were becoming extreme in the metal scene, and I think bands like Helstar were sorta lost in that. Its funny because I think as a metalhead I appreciated this one so much more 5-10 years after it came out. The record is a true metal album with NO hints of anything else...just pure 1980's heavy metal.
This is high school shit for me. It reminds me Pounding beers in the bushes someplace in Latham NY on a friday night with friends like Dave Stevenson, and Pat J. Not a care in the world... metal and partying. One of my favorite record covers of the time period. Enjoy this one.

These guys were a obscure hardcore punk band from San Antonio Texas. I first heard them in the late 80's on the compilation LP "cottage cheese from the lips of death". From what I know they only appeared on that comp, and this 7" ep. I think people from outside the area were pretty offended by the bands record cover, record title, and song titles/lyrics. From what I've heard people from the area, and people that knew them knew that this record was a total joke, and they were just trying to have fun(yeah I know, at womens expense), and trying to offend people. It's no wonder people could give two shits about this record... their loss, because this record is a heafty punk rock ripper.

This is D45's second 7", it came out in 1988, and is a real treat, holding a special place in my heart. The band was formed in 1985 in Houston Texas, the home of Verbal Abuse, and DRI(before those bands both relocated to San Francisco). Dresden put out a number of 7"s(maybe four total?), and a LP. This 7" is the beginning of their thrashy crossover sound. Lots of crazy guitar solos, noodles and pointless wanks keep me loving this ep. The vocals are snotty, nerdy, but fast and sharp.
I recall reading a review of this ep in Maximum Rock n Roll back in the day when I looked at it as a bible for punk hardcore. The review, and the band name made me write the band, sending them $2 and a copy of my band the Romper Room Rejects demo tape. A few weeks later I received this ep in the mail, with a nice note from the guitarist (Pat I think). Was a pretty inspirational lil note that made me proud to be in RRR. For a good month this ep didn't leave my turntable, and even gained the attention of my metalheaded roomy Kenny D. Through the bands years they became even tighter, and more metal influenced. Devastation were from Corpus Christi Texas, and put this their debut LP out in 1986. I think its safe to say that if I heard this today, I might not be all to impressed, due to to the production. Its also safe to say that these guys went on to influence the death metal scene with their thrashing bay area sound. I love the vocals, as they are totally hardcore punk influenced.
My long haired Livermore California friend Kenny Donovan turned me onto these dudes. His poor mom would drive us someplace, kenny would stick a thrash tape in the tape deck, and she'd be driving, screaming for him to turn that shit down! He'd just smile and mimic playing air drums. Good times..
