Looking at my blog this morning, I realized I'd been ignoring hardcore and punk for some time, so I've decided to upload the goofy A.O.D.
A.O.D. were from New Jersey and played a wacky brand of hilarious, blazing fast hardcore punk. They also had their own record label called Buy Our Records.
I first heard these guys from a friend of mine named Eric Meade(sp),whom lived around the corner from me on Fell St in S.F. in around 1985. He made me a mixed tape with Incredible East coast bands that I'd yet to hear (SSD, 76% Uncertain, Jerrys KIds, Sacred Denial,etc). I still have the tape. I actually ran into Eric in L.A. working at an Amoeba Records about 2 years ago. It was an incredible coincidence. I owe that dude a lot.

I love this record because It reminds me of a Megadeth LP that should have been made sometime after killing is my business.
Juggernaut were from Austin Texas, and formed in around 1984 (putting out three demos before this the bands first release). These guys have always been labeled a speed metal or thrash metal band, though they really only ever break mid paced speed a few times on this LP. That doesn't stop this stuff from punishing. Totally catchy Metal with ridiculous lyrics.
I was turned onto this record by my high school friend Dave Stevenson. I had played in a band with him, and ended up buying some of his record collection. This LP was among a bunch of punk and hardcore records.

Metal Mania zines 1982-83

Sorry, No music to upload for you today, as I'm rtraveling and on the road. I did recently recover these Old copies of Metal Mania though, so I thought I'd share them with people.
These were put out by Ron Quintana, and were my bible alongside Maximum Rock n roll, and Suburban Voice in the early 80's. I bought all of these at the Record Vault in S.F. during the hey day of the thrash metal shit that was happening there. The zine was seriously great because it was so rawly put together (copy paste style). Thanks to my buddy Devon for returning this safely to me some 15 years later.

Witchfinder General could have been a perfect Sabbath cover band, cept these guys wrote their own great songs.
More new wave of british heavy metal from these UK gods...and again, they Formed in around 1978. W.G. can be classified as one of the original NWOBHM bands. Some of the riffs are straight up Sabbath riffs, with their own special twists thrown in. Funny to remember seeing these records at Record Town and Strawberrys in the import section as a kid, I figured they'd always be around. The nudity in the record covers always attracted a teenage metalhead to th bands records.

Some of these riffs and licks are straight up Slayer, mixed with stuff like Legacy and other Bay area thrash acts from the mid 80's.
These Texas thrashers also add some blast beats here and there (almost ahead of their time on "gutter rats"). The vox are sorta Hardcore/punk styled (crossover I guess in the vein of Cryptic Slaughter or something), with all the lyrics being about science.
I discovered the bands demo around 1988 from a hardcore dude named Lurky, who was an underground "cock fighter". The dude was twisted.

Vicious thrash metal that always reminded me a bit of the likes of Assassin or Dark Angel(with some Slayer thrown in ). This is the bands second release, and is a bit more technical than the previous.
There isn't really anything that makes this LP stick out any more than other great thrash that was coming out at the time, Its just another important LP to me because it brings back certain memories of a time and place I was at with certain people.
When I listen to this record it brings me back to my Livermore California days, driving around in my 1972 Gremlin, and having my long red haired sidekick Kenny trying to persistently put this tape in the tape deck.. with me yelling about being over metal and to throw some R.K.L. in instead. Kenny usually won.

I stayed away from this band for years due to their bad fucking name. My friend Kenny from California tried to turn me on to this LP when it came out, but I just couldnt deal with the name. It took me to about 1989 or 1990, and me having gotten the record in a collection that I purchased to actually give this thrasher a chance and actually learned to love the LP. Mix some decent Bay Area crossover metal with the likes of fellow German's Destruction and you've got R.M. This is a rager.
The cover... again something I could have created with the right crayon collection.

My buddy, neighbor Artie Philie gave this 12" to me as a gift for watching his cats. Wantagh Long Island metal played in the nwobhm style from way back in 1984 (fuck I was still a youngin). Only 4 tunes on this cheesy 12"(this is for die hard metal-heads only). I'm not sure what else the band ever did, this could be it. The front cover is seriously ridiculous as it looks like a crayon drawing that I woulda done in 7th grade if I had ran out of magic markers. This was self released by the band, so I'm guessing this is a VERY low pressed record.

I was totally stoked to hear these guys, as they came from an area not to far away from where I grew up, Rochester NY (Rodchester). My guitar teacher, Henry of China White turned me on to the band in around 1982.
These guys were a three piece band that featured Ronnie James Dio's cousin, David "rock" Fienstein on guitar and vocals (I think he might have played in Elf with Dio, way pre Dio).
I guess these guys were a bit more "hard rocking" then a lot of other metal acts... But I still consider this to be NY's version of the nwobhm. If you dig bands like early Riot, Anvil, etc than you are going to love this shit. Totally hard edged and catchy metal/hard rock. Another fucking great record cover, that just drew me right into the band.

Fates Warning were one of the few bands any of us metal heads knew of back in the day that were from Connecticut. The band played a catchy version of nwobhm, that had a spot on Iron Maiden aspect to their sound. I mean seriously, If Maiden were to have had to replace Dickenson in the 80's, then the front man from this band (John Arch) could have replaced him no problem. The dual guitar solos were also spot on as well.
Another classic metal cover that again, is so bad, that it was good. These covers were so important back then in selling the records to us dip shits.
I discovered this band by watching a friend who went to Albany high named Ig, who would play inner city basketball in the projects(being the only white kid in the games), and he'd have his boom box on the sidelines with a few of us fellow metal heads rooting the dude on. He almost listened to Fates Warning all the time. This is the only record I can stomach by them.

When I think of Tank, I think of beer and drinking, as They are a drinking band, like AC/DC, and Motorhead. I discovered Tank on a boom box blasted by a kid that we called Yom Bones in high school in the 80s. Yom Bones(sp?) would eat his cereal with beer instead of milk, and would show up on Friday and Saturday nights at a place we called "the Rocks"(bunch of boulders piled together in the woods where we partied). He was always blasting this tape. When the cops would show up to chase us away, you could hear Bones running away with "echoes of a distant battle" fading into the night from his boom box.
Tank were formed by an ex member of the U.K punk band the Damned in 1980 who wanted to play more metal sounding music. Tank sound much like Motorhead (not as good of course), but adding more of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Sound to their bite. The band put out many great records, and I listen to they're records up until '87ish.

Executioner were yet another band that I was convinced into buying their record due to the artwork( I sorta had a one track mind as far as art went back then). Executioner were from the Boston Area, and later featured Seth Putnam (A.C. vocalist) on bass guitar.
This record really is on the cusp of both punk and metal. There are cool elements of both styles written all over the songs on this slab. Some songs are just over a minute long, while others pass the 4 min mark. The music is raw as fuck metallic riffage, while the vox are sorta Boston or old NYC hardcore sounding(Antidote). My favorite track is "your life is over".

Mortal Sin are one of the few metal bands I've ever heard from Australia... I was tricked into thinking they were a California band when I'd first been turned on to them by my pal Kenny. They really perfect the Bay area 80's thrash metal sound, and play awesome metal in the vein of early Metallica, Exodus, Dark Angel and Legacy. Death bangers is what they called their fans...
The cover artwork on this album is so bad, that its good. It really helps to make this a classic metal album.

Condemned?-humanoid or biomechanoid? LP(1986)

I'm not really sure how many of you guys that read my blog and listen to this stuff will actually get this recording. listening back to this three man band project, its really sorta prog-core, and If I hadn't bought it when it came out, I might be sorta turned off to it. I'm not sure... I know i still love it, and it makes me feel good to re listen to it. It really has a Christ on Parade, early Neurosis vibe to it.
The story goes that when Condemned To Death broke up, Keith the bassist moved to Australia to play in Death Sentence. He later did this project with two members of Australia's Vicious Circle. I would swear that more than one of the songs on this ended up being used musically as songs in Condemned Attitude (you guessed it, members of Attitude Adjustment and C2D).
I bought my copy of this LP at Reckless records on Haight Street in SF around 1986 or 1987, its on green wax.

Nasty Savage were from Brandon Florida, and were rumored to feature a pro wrestler as their front man...Nasty Ronnie Savage. The band had a devote following, and lots of interest from kids like me, a year before the LP even existed. This was due to Ronnie's use of underground rags, and hype he pretty much created himself way pre internet.
This LP is basically just some early stripped down speed metal, with awesome bass licks and riffage and then Ronnie's over the top screams added to liven things up a bit. This record is the first that I'm familiar with, that was recorded at the now infamous metal studio "Morris sound"(you know... Morbid Angel, Terrorizer, Assuck, Cannibal Corpse, etc).
Nasty Savage might have started or discovered something good in the waters of Florida.

This band were from Toronto, and put this record out the year I graduated high school. I Was turned onto these guys by a dude that semi lived with me in S.F.California in 1986... I forget his name even, but he was a grunt who had gone awol from the marines. The dumb ass had stolen c.o. cartridges, stored them in our basement, and somehow they leaked their way through the air vents, etc spreading teargas through out the house. I ended up with his copy of this record and a few others when he disappeared.
These guys band played a great political hardcore that reminds me of a more metal Youth Youth Youth. I love "international blacklist" and "h bomb".

I saw these guys at the On Broadway in 1985. A totally great show with many like minded punks and metal heads thrashing around together. What I recall most about the band was the guitarist's clear guitar (totally reminded me of Black Flag).... I'd never heard these guys yet, but after the show ended up with this LP. Unfortunately nothing the band did after this, was even half as close nor as godly as Reagans in.

I was already very familiar with all the songs on this LP, as the band had been playing them for a long time before the release of this LP. Not sure what the hold up on this debut record was, but it surely should have come out around 86 or 87. Violence were a great live band and could be seen live anywhere almost any weekend night in the bay area. The band stuck to playing mainly metal shows, but that didn't stop punks in San Francisco from going to check them out as well.

These guys meant everything to me in 1985-86 while I was living on speed in S.F. Andy "Airborne" Anderson the singer worked at the local record store (the record vault on Polk street), and was enthusiastic about all aspects of underground music. He was always telling stories, turning kids on to new fast music, etc.
I saw these guys at least a half a dozen times, everywhere from the Farm, to the on Broadway, to Ruthies Inn.
This was another band that appealed to me because they played the perfect blend of metal and hardcore punk, influencing so many kids like myself. This demo is so raw and pissed, its a genuine classic. It blows the LP away. Its rumored that Lars Ulrich recorded this demo, no idea of its a fabrication or not.
Andy I hear is now in comedy, and the drummer, Kontos was in Machine Head with some Vio-lence members.
The Above picture is why Andy got his nickname.

So many amazing things can be said about these Pleasanton California thrashers. These dudes seriously believed heavily in the do it yourself scene, and played tons of punk & metal shows in the bay area.
The first song on this LP is called hiding under white and is about the stupidity of the Klan, racial prejudice, etc. Jeff Hill was an amazing dude and great guitarist and front man. From what I can recall The bands drummer , Mike spent his life on crutches, and was pretty much crippled. I don't know how he was able to pull this shit off. It was amazing to watch him set up his drums then play.
I was very lucky to see these guys play tons of shows/party's in the suburbs of Northern California in the 80's, as my roommate Kenny was schoolmates with these dudes. Metal played with a punk attitude. Listening to these guys makes me think of old friends from that part of my life (jeff Stuckey, mike Lurky, Kenny, K. Dittmer).

Omen were a band I listened to in high school. My friend Dave Franchini and myself would get drunk in the woods and blast this record. Dave was the ultimate headbanger, and could get his curled locks flowing to this album. It was seriously a sight to see.
How can you go wrong with a song called "be my wench"? These guys came from the same school of metal as say Grim Reaper or Satan, cept I think Omen were from L.A. (playing the 2nd or 3rd tier of NWOBHM).
I saw them once in S.F. at the Stone (I think). There was no one there... just me and my buddy Zoran standing in front of these guys as they played this gigantic hall as though there were people there. It was funny. At the end of the set the singer screamed something like "WE'LL BE BACK TO KICK YOUR ASS'S SAN FRANCISCO!!!!"

Okay, I never really dug all to much Raven, but "all for one" kicked my ass, and probably was one of the most influential records for learning heavy metal guitar playing for me. I loved the harmonics, and killer riffs that get pulled off here (hung drawn and quartered, and break the chain). Most my friends never understood my fascination with this LP.
Raven were a three piece band from the U.K. , who formed in around 1978 by the two brothers in the band.
The only other record I can deal with by these guys is "wiped out". There are a couple sleepers on "All for one"(some cheese ones as well), but for the most part it kills. Great production, a cool cover

Clown Alley were one of the first bands I saw live when I moved out to the Bay Area in the mid 80's. I was in total awe watching the band go crazy, looking normal as fuck but playing melodic, simple, yet very original sounding thrash. The band had more then one female member when I first saw them. The band sounded metal as fuck, but didn't really fit the part..
When circus of chaos came out my buddy Zoran and myself found ourselves spinning the record almost daily. The production is insane on this LP, and has some wicked melodic guitar wanks that just get stuck in your head. The band featured 3 members in its lifetime that went on to play in the Melvins.
This LP came out on Alchemy records (also did some RKL, and Poison Idea).
Its a shame that this is all the band did...

Yes I know, there is a pentagram in every town. Well this one is from Turkey. How fucking cool is that? How much thrash metal do you think ever came out of Turkey? The band is sort of known as gods, or has a cult like status in Turkey for pioneering the heavy music scene there... and also because the first guitarist was killed by Terrorists in Turkey in 1993. The band later changed their name to Mezarkabul (meaning Pentagram).

Mottek were one of the earlier of the German hardcore/punk bands that I had heard. During this time period Germany was still divided into West Germany, and East Germany, so The political climate there made for some of the best punk rock to come out of Europe in the 80's. Mottek were one of the earlier European bands I'd heard alongside BGK, Raw Power, L'arm, Upright Citizens, etc. They weren't afraid to sing in their native language either. great stuff...
