STOSSTRUPP Kein schöner Land 7"(1983)
01.neue welt
02.neo's
03.kein schoner
04.im namen des volkes
What's pretty incredible to me, and many a hardcore punk record collectors is what had happened to, and why the Rock O Rama Record label went from releasing amazing punk records in the early 1980's, to then releasing white power stuff such as Skrewdriver, Brutal Attack, etc? Its mind boggling really. The early stuff on the label was this sorta obscure scandi-German noisy punk rock that even to this day is influencing newer and younger punk bands from around the globe. Stosstrup were one of those raw noisy punk bands. Other early releases include Skeptix, Ohl, Bastards, Razors, Appendix, Tarveet Kadet, Riistetyt, etc.
When I moved to the city, and gas prices started going through the roof, I made the decision to trade an old classic muscle car for some old and classic punk records. I made a weird record trade with My friend Dan, who back in the late 80's-90s was known in Albany as "Gerber Skin"(because of his baby like appearance). As a collector I'd traded records many a times, but Dan was interested in something else. Yup, a 1967 dodge dart GT that I had owned, and was just letting it sit to collect dust and mold. We made the trade, I ended up with this tasty slab of wax that came out out on the Rock O Rama Label. I ended up with a bunch of skinhead rock n roll records. Dan ended up with my car and a Slayer tape in the tape deck. He later painted the car and made a brother proud. It was a good trade for the both of us.
The cover art on this record always looked so brutal to me. I was so happy to finally have it.

thanks! I have only ever seen pictures of this record. They have an LP as well?
ReplyDeleteThe rumor I used to hear was that Herbert Egoldt bought out some other punk label, hence the wide contrast in releases. Prior to that he was putting out rockabilly stuff. Unless someone else knows the real story, we'll never know 'cuz he died a few years back. Rock-o-Rama was a great label, though--totally scummy and devoid of any redeeming social value, as a good label should be.
ReplyDeleteRIP Herbert. Great band. Thanks for the blog and music.
ReplyDeleteyou sure these guys aren't right wingers or Natzi's? they have a song called "neo's"
ReplyDeleteWhat is it about? I only ask because the label was so famous for putting out white power stuff
the cover shot is a still from the movie Psycho. it's Norman's dead mother.
ReplyDeletei love this blog. Its a incredible resource in underground music. please keep it up! many thankx
ReplyDelete"Neo's" is an antinazi song from what I've read. It seems that Herbert used a black marker on the lyrics so no one could read it.
ReplyDeleteIts true, curious guy is right. Neo's is anti Nazi song.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics to all the songs on the record are on the back cover. My copy has the lyrics to Neo's scribbled out with a black marker.
I think that this is true in copies he had laying around(after his politics changed from lefty to righty). I've heard that the early copies got out to people with out being attacked by a magic marker.
Nate
actually most of the copies had the blacked out lyrics on the back. i think all of my friends who own that record have the "censored" cover.
ReplyDeletethey also have a LP, but it sounds "tamer" than the 7".
but like most rockorama-bands just below-average in my opinion.
you should check out the better german bands from the 80ies like vorkriegsjugend, toxoplasma, inferno etc...
the reason behind the few copies with "clean" sleeves circulating might be that the Stosstrupp 7" was released in 83, just one year before rockorama changed their "policies" (RRR 35, released in 1984 was the first skinhead release, after that there were only some finnish hc records, and after RRR 46 it was clear that ROR was now a RAC-label), so only the copies originally sold from 83 to 84 have the lyrics on the back not crossed out...
ReplyDeleteby the way, some older friends of mine told me that most ROR-releases were ignored by german punks in the 80ies because of the bad sound and below-average skills of most bands. that might also be a reason why Stosstrupp did not sell many 7"s in 83-84 ;-)
actually you are wrong chris.
ReplyDeletewe(Germans)were just more interested in buying USA hardcore and punk releases in the early 80's, instead of German ones. I think this was the case in many European hc scenes. It had nothing to do with "the bad sound and below-average skills of most bands". That is just silly. As a German who bought and collected hc records back then our outlook was simple. These ROR releases were easily found, where as some of U.S. hc releases you knew that you wouldn't ever see again because they were imports, so we bought them up.
Whatever the case, thank you for the blog.
herman
Everyone was emulating, and buying U.S. hardcore at this time , cept maybe the Japanese.
ReplyDeleteNate
its true.
ReplyDeleteI am from the Netherlands, and all I was buying in 1983 was U.S. hardcore.
please post more rare 7"s
Easy anwer: Herbert E. was all about money. I met him once and he told me he was not interested in punk/skins/nazi stuff. Actually he was only into blues music :-)
ReplyDeleteHe was the only label releasing and distributing That White-Power music in the late 80´s. The unification of Germany in 1989 made him a rich man with all those east-german-boneheads buying all his shit...
Yo kids, Herbert was just a moneymaker exploiting you...hahaha...
... and he had a sense of humor too: the original VORKRIEGSPHASE recordings for their LO on RoR sound very different...After they left the studio Herbert (at that time releasing that chaotic FinnHC) intructed the mixer : " All knobs at ten" :-)
ReplyDeleteVorkriegsphase were in a shock hearing their own LP...hahaha...
Great download.
ReplyDeleteEgoldt went to his grave hated by leftists and right wingers. He ripped off everyone! I'm amused and not at all surprised to find out he was Blues fan.
...and THANKS, btw.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of the pre-Nazi ROR stuff. Some of it is so crude and lo-fi it's almost like "outsider art" or something. (Check out Cotzbrocken's LP if you can). If anything most of the Finnish stuff sounds too polished.
The Cover-Pic is taken from Hitchcock´s "PSYCHO"!!!
ReplyDeleteThe cover is killing but I don't like punk that much. Still if you wonder why the label changed so drasticly it is not that hard to guess, it is a company and as one had to go with the flow, if the white power was going to give them a better profit...
ReplyDeleteHerbert Egoldt was always just interested in money, not in music. He was never a punk or a skinhead. As he started around 1977 with his recordings Punkrock was simply the big thing and he (btw a painter)wanted his share. He was much older than all the Punks. I guess 35 to 40. He ripped all the Punk Bands off. They did never recieve any money, just some copies of the records. He changed the pictures of the covers without asking, the sound quality was always poor, because he tried to spare some money. And the bands started to understand and to speak out what was happening.
ReplyDeleteThe band ÄNI(X)VÄX was singing about him (Schock & Drama, Rock-o-Rama, mit jeder Band das gleiche Drama - shock & drama, Rock o Rama with every band the same drama). The Band M.A.F. told everybody NOT to buy their record. In the end no Punkband wanted to work with him. Then he found some right wing bands, cause he was the only one willing to work with them and had a deal with a finnish Punk label.
It is one of my favorites punk bands, they influenced a lot of todays punk bands.
ReplyDeletegot the stossstrup and cotsbrocken l.p.'s from him after telling me to send extra money as he's none left and would have to but them for me himself!!!!!unfuckin real.this was about 1983 or so,then he does ultra nationalist stuff-wanted to know about the skinhead scene in ireland-cork,belfast,dublin etc etc
ReplyDeleteGo to YouTube "börse82, Teil3. It is the only existing STOSSTRUPP Video!
