SACRED DENIAL-life's been getting to me LP(1985)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1.what religion
2.pro liar
3.better way to die
4.Why can't we be friends
5.we're all weird
6.Easter Sunday
7.born free
8.pissed at the world
9.life's getting to me
10.sacred denial
11.sticks and stones
12.man in a long coat

Sacred Denial were from Clifton NJ(a suburb that is very close to where I'm living now). The band had a pretty bad reputation, mainly due to the fact that they were from the great state of Jersey. New Jersey hardcore back then was known for its nerdy, cheese ball approach, and its wackiness that wasn't always as clever as the dudes playing it maybe thought it was. I avoided most NJ hardcore 'cept for maybe A.O.D. for a long time.
The crazy thing about this record is how unbelievably awesome it is. Its generic in every sense of the word, but just thrash's through as though it was Jerry's Kids "my world". Seriously... this is a real under the radar, ignored, obscure tooth and chip thrash record that should be enjoyed by hardcore lovers worldwide. "what religion" , "pissed at the world" and "pro-liar" are tasty, catchy rippers that are the stand outs for me on this yummy platter.
This is exactly what hardcore was meant to sound like in the 1980's. Don't be fooled by the bands other records though.. they just don't compare, not even by 50%.
I was turned onto these guys while living in S.F. by my neighbor and friend Eric Meade. Dude made me tapes loaded with some of the best hc I've to this day ever heard. Thanks Eric, I owe you for sure.
Enjoy.

Pro liar

president of the united states is what i'd like to be
I'll determine all your fates, a president's what I'd like to be
gonna build a brand new nation

I'll be very honest
I won't let you down
while I wear the crown
you'll be proud of me
Just you wait and see

I won't interfere with your private lives
in the white house I'll thrive
have your own jobs

everything will be alright
everything will be just fine

and we will fight against all those
who stand in the way
of America with the new upgrade defense
and won''t have nothing to worry about
we'' have to tighten our belts
and do the best we can
so just sit back, relax
and let me take complete control

BEDLAM-lost in space 12"(1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

01.lost in space
02.mongoofy
03.burn one
04.knife in my back
05.rotting from the inside out
06.cutback
07.generation landslide

My wife and I have recently been looking at perhaps moving from Brooklyn NY to the wonderful state of NJ. I figured I'd pay some respect to the godawful state of NJ on this wonderful 4th of July by posting some bad, yet obscure NJ hardcore.
Seriously though... I now know where West Orange is because we looked at houses there, and the address where this 12" was recorded was in an area I'd recently been while driving around.
I just got a copy of this record after selling all my Bedlam stuff in the early 1990's, due to some song they had about A.i.d.s. Yup, I was sort of a pc dickhead for sure. The song was stupid, and isn't on this record, so I have no idea what I was thinking. I guess I took my hardcore pretty seriously back then.
I first heard these guys in maybe 1986, when a neighbor/friend in San Fran named Eric Meade made me the best mix tape I think I've ever heard. The tape featured at least 4 songs each by the likes of Jerrys Kids, CIA, Reagan Youth, the Bad Brains, FU's, Sacred Denial(the good LP songs), 76% Uncertain, Void, Beastie Boys, SSD, and yup... Bedlam. I liked the band for their dirgy style, and the harsh production that you could tell was recorded and mixed by someone that had no idea what to do with the bands sound, so hey, lets add some reverb!
This record has everything you need, fast parts, slow mosh parts, and some weird psych stuff mixed in as well.
I hadn't seen this Friend Eric in almost 20 years, and was wondering about what ever happened to him. I went to Amoeba Records with my pal Matt Average, and Average starts asking me, "hey man, wasn't that guy in C2D"? I looked and was like...holy shit!!! I walked up and asked him if he used to live off of Fell street in S.F, and told him who I was. It was so weird, and very cool. Eric had really made a huge impact on me 20 years earlier, and I'd been wanting to tell him that.

V/A BORN TO METALIZE Compilation LP(1984)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The BEAST
01.randal flagg
02.is this life
03.the shape

SNEAK ATTACK
04.ultrasonic metal
05.dirty harry
06.sneak attack

TORTURED DOG
07.can't run from evil
08.witch hunter
09.tortured dog

HADES
10.rogues march
11.gloomy sunday

What can I say, this is where I first heard New Jersey's Hades. Most the bands on here were from Jersey, and one of them from NY. The bands are pretty obscure, and prolly aren't all to relevant to many people(cept for maybe Hades). The bands did however have a impact on me. The Sneak Attack song "ultrasonic metal" is brilliant. I can listen to that song over and over and over. Its epic.
This record came out during the time in metal when strange things were happening. You had Nwobhm style bands trying to jump ship, and start playing faster, and heavier because it was sorta easy to see that that was the future of metal. I think you can sorta hear that in most these bands on this comp, they are semi stuck in a weird metal purgatory.
I'm sorta shocked that I bought this record because the cover art is just so awful. Back then the cover was helpful in selling me a record. Today I think the cover is bad, in a good way. Its funny, and made me laugh when I pulled it out after years of neglect.
The Tortured Dog song "can't run from evil" has a few skips in it. I kept it on anyways, because its a awesome song. Please comment.

SYMPHONY OF GRIEF-demo tape(1993)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

01.infernal creation
02.assimulation of souls
03.cerebral hemorage

I bought this one on a whim in Long Island on a record shopping spree I was on with my buddies Artie and Ron.
The band as you could probably guess play a pretty awesome style of doom/death metal. Most the songs are played heavy and slow, with some sudden bursts of speed thrown in here and there. I'd say they are a pure mixture of Incantation and Grief. Semi Obscure shit for sure, these dudes were from Riverside NJ. This is their second demo, they also released a few 7"s, but broke up in around 1996. Cool stuff for sure.

HADES resisting success LP (1987)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1.the leaders
2.on to lliad
3.legal tender
4.sweet revenge
5.night stalker
6.resist success
7.widows mite(chapter 11)
8.the cross
9.masque of the red death

I recently bought this at the wfmu record convention because it was cheap, and I was unsure that I still owned it. I store most all of my record collection at my mothers house upstate, so a lot of times I forget what I own. At any rate when my buddy Charles Maggio whom I was working for selling records at the convention saw this LP, he looked on the back cover to show me that one of the members, "Dan Lorenzo" later was Charles sisters soft ball coach. The band was from his home town in N.J. Pretty hilarious and weird as hell.
When one listens to this LP you can hear much of what was happening in the speed metal scene of the 80's for sure. People like to say these guys were a power metal band, whatever. I hear lots of early Death Angel, and even some Overkill in both the song writing and the production. I'd seen both those bands in the 80's, but never saw these bros. live, I'm feeling like I missed out for sure. Most punks will detest this one as there are true metal vocals with awesome high pitched falsetto screams, weird bass lines, acoustic intros and triumphant double bass drumming. I love this shit for sure...great vocals that make me wanna go back and listen to those Overkill records I thought I out grew. This record really makes me feel young again. Thanks Hades. Comment if you download.

DEATHRASH-faces of death demo (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
1.lock jaw
2.buried alive
3.blood for blood

Deathrash were an amazing NJ metal band that never did the vinyl thing. After talking to Pat about the band, I thought he told me that he joined Whiplash as a replacement for a while, and maybe that semi killed Deathrash? I forget the details, exactly, I'm prolly way off, Maybe he'll chime in here in the comments. I know that Tony Scaglione from Whiplash played on this demo. One of the best NJ metal bands ever in my opinion. The Deathrash stuff has so many elements of different influences its just delicious. Think Hirax, Death Angel, Betrayel, etc. Deathrash had the Bay area sound for sure.
I lucked out on this demo tape, as I found it in this old dirty record store in Albany NY called Worlds records. the store was always amazing, and you could uncover all kinds of treasures there if you didn't mind getting dirty. The owner Steve would find random stuff in the basement and just put it out in stacks. I used to comb the store three times a week for rarities. I found this demo on one of those comb through in around 1995. I'd heard the band on a LP comp, but that was all the band had released besides this so I was ecstatic to find the tape. I cautiously took it to the counter wondering what Steve would charge me. Without flinching he said... "ah, this is a hard one to find....99 cents." I was stoked to get the tape home to blast it. I loved that store... It brought me so much great music for decades. This is ripped from a 22 year old tape, unbelievable. These dudes have just reformed and are now playing shows again.

took down the upload link at the request of Pat Burns of deathrash. check the comments for more info.
