I was turned on to this band by my neighbor/friend Eric Meade when I lived in San Francisco, back in the mid 1980's. Eric turned me on to so much in the way of obscure music back then. He was one of the most open minded people I'd ever met.
I think I heard the LP first, and then later mail ordered this ep from the band directly(thanks MRR). These guys played some Some pretty Brutal crossover, that I could relate to in every way. It was a great merging of metal and punk. Listening back its so ahead of its time. This records been with me a long time now. The band was always pretty obscure, and really under-rated hailing from Chicago. The vocals are pretty harsh sounding considering the time period. Back in the 80's it was sort of a no brainer that a 7" was worth picking up if it had 8 or more songs on it. Still hard to believe that I used to order 7"s for $2.50ppd. Where have all the good times gone?

Its been a while, my apologies to those who check the site regularly. This Is one of the earliest bands from Brazil that I remember hearing. For me this predates Sepultura by years. This album is a perfect crossover record.
The first thing I remember hearing by these guys was the split with Sub, shit was so punk...
Back in the day I would scour 'zines like Maximum Rock n Roll, Suburban Voice, Flipside, etc for any new bands that I'd never heard of before. The more underground, the better. I would read, and then write to the international punks in the classified sections hoping to tape trade, and hear something new from a country I knew very little about. It was exciting, and the process took time. Remember this was all snail mail, there was no internet.
Roberto was a Brazilian punk metal crossover freak whom I'd written to, and became pen pals/tape trading buddies with in around 1987. Dude would send me everything Brazilian. In return I'd tape him American stuff that I thought he would have a hard time finding. We did this for about 2 years. At any rate I'd sent Roberto a pretty big and expensive package. After months of not hearing anything from my friend,I wrote him asking if he'd gotten my stuff. Still no reply. Months had turned into almost a year. I kept writing, hoping I'd not been screwed like so many times before, and I was desperately in need of a new dose of foreign hardcore.
Months later I received a package. It was bigger then normal, it was LP sized, not like our regular tape sized packages. I eagerly opened the package to find this Ratos LP. There was a note in the package, so I of course proceeded to read it. It wasn't from Roberto, but instead his brother was writing me to tell me that Roberto had been killed on the streets of Sau Palo for "being different". This was shocking as hell to me. All I could do was write his brother back, give him my condolences, and thank him for thinking of me. As I listen to this I'm drinking Vodka and thinking of those times, and that friendship.

These dudes were an obscure joke crossover band from Portland Oregon. The band first released a demo in around 1985-86, and then this their only album in 1988. The band runs through practically every underground genre including metal, hardcore, jazz, grind, thrash, and punk. Not something one can listen to everyday, but funny as hell, and kooky enough to influence certain powerviolence bands that came out in the 90's.
Think Wehrmacht meets S.O.D. I can remember reading in the bands thanks list, Siege (for the influence), and automatically I started trying to find out who Siege were.
Listening to this record is really all about memories for me. Brings me back to Albany NY after I moved home from S.F. in around 1989. My friend Louis Jakobs had a long haired metal buddy named Roger who really only into metal. Roger traded me This LP and the Infest slave for some metal record that I am having a hard time recalling. Might have been the Hellhammer 12". At any rate, I traded this or sold this record in my second purge, and of course regretted doing so. It wasn't until recently that my Neighbor Artie and I discovered/met this Russian record collector in our neighborhood, who let us come over and browse records (by appointment only). I was able to score this record again for $5. Thanks Ed!

Thrashing Hectic Circle mixed metal and punk together perfectly, making for some sweet Northern California crossover in the 80's. Seriously, if you love the likes of old DRI and Sodom, etc. then you'll dig this. I don't think they ever really went over well with hc kids cause of the length of their hair. My old band the Romper Room Rejects practiced next door to these bros in Livermore California when I was living out there in 1988. We shared an Autobody shop and a mechanics garage, that were next door to one another for practicing. I remember seeing these dudes dressed up in gas masks with light shows, etc at their practices. They went all out when they played even for themselves. This is the bands first demo, they recorded the Christian brainwash one next, which is also on my blog in the Archives. I prefer that one, but this one has a very special memory.

I remember Kenny D listening to this demo tape on the way to a show at Gilman street for a punk gig we were playing there in 1987 or 1988. The reason I recall this is that we had a pretty insane car accident on what ever five lane highway connects Livermore to Oakland (890 maybe?). I was following My friend Kenny who played drums in our band. He was driving a Cherokee scout, I was driving his 1972 Chevelle. It was raining hard, we were already late to the show, and I was sorta tailgating Kenny. He started to swerve at about 80mph, lost control of his vehicle, and I rammed him sideways at 80 mph. When I came to, Kenny was running around picking up his drum set from all over the highway, just in shock. This tape was still playing on the cassette deck, as cars were floating around the two totaled cars, and a 10 piece drum set, and some amps scattered about the highway. I remember because I turned it off, as it was bewildering to me. I had two other people with me, my buddy Kurt Dittmer, and a girlfriend who had both blacked out as well, but were okay. Kenny's parents somehow happened upon the accident, and ended up driving us to the show. We did end up playing , and were still in shock from the accident. I recall Tim Yo introducing us as the band no highway could stop. Both Kenny's cars were totaled. Enjoy, and comment please.

These speedcore ragers were from mid Western Wisconsin, and formed in around 1984, with Members on this album being no more than 17 years old. Young ins Making great underground music.
This album is almost perfect in my opinion. The production is totally metal, while the songs and vox have a great crossover feel to them. The vocals are shouted or hollered in a hardcore sort of way, but they don't loose the metal vibe. I can't gush over this record enough, its just great. It has elements of the 1st Megadeth LP meets Cryptic Slaughter or something. How can you go wrong with members sporting t shirts from both Minor Threat, and the Grateful Dead on the back cover photo? Ridiculous, right? This is fast, tight, and very memorable.
The artwork to this record is horrifically bad, making it totally great if you get my drift.
Another Erl records score, from when I moved back to Albany in the late 80's. Enjoy, and comment if you download.

12. Who's the Terrorist
13. Now You're a Big Boy
14. Live Your Own Life
15. Slave

These punk thrashers were from Belgium, and I'm doubting to many people remember them. I originally bought this LP because I thought that that part of Europe was all pretty much the same. Sorry... Yup, thought they were kraut related, and anyone that reads this blog knows that I have a weakness in my heart for Germans, and thrash. The members of this band were between the ages of 16-19 when this LP was recorded, just pups. The band were a straightedge band, though musically or lyrically you couldn't tell. I used to trade letters and got this record from the singer, Bollie. The songs on this obscure and under rated LP are all pretty fast except for the opening first song. The others are all faster than the sound of light. The songs mostly all time in at around 2 mins or more, which is of course long for a hardcore punk band, but works well. The production is raw as hell, and works well with the solos and shit, keeping this from ever feeling metal. Enjoy and comment!

13.What Happened

Man I love this record cover, it really just looks so cool. A great drawing indeed, that helped to suck me into these UK noisecore thrashers. I heard this around the same time that I discovered Fear Of God, L'arm, etc. Totally noisy "we don't give a shit" hardcore punk. I loved the bands mix of humor and politics in their music. I think the only downside to them was the lack of bottom end, keeping them from sounding as heavy as they probably actually were. The band was a three piece, that included no bass player, just a vocalist, guitarist, and a drummer. Another great record that came out on the Looney Tunes label, way ahead of its time.
My buddy Louis turned me on to this band as well as so much other great Euro/Japanese records from the 80's. Thanks buddy!
no songs are missing, although only 11 show up in the file, the other two go into other songs. enjoy, and comment.

Ok, all though this is not the greatest record in the world, its still sorta funny none the less. Featuring Danny Lilker from S.O.D., Anthrax, Brutal Truth, Hemlocke, etc. Dude plays drums on this, and I think the only other guy that can play anything is the guitarist. The bassist, and singer were just sorta friends of Danny's whom used to go to a certain taco joint in Queens after hardcore/metal shows in the 1980's. Dudes would get completely high, go eat tacos, and talk about this joke hardcore band they were going to start. Well they did it. End result, not so musically talented, but funny due to all the other crap that was coming out at the time. Lyrics were def written while these dudes were stoned.

21.black doomy theme
22.greed
SEA MONKEYS
23.cardiac arrest
24.on the team
PSYCHO
25 meatmarket

I love most of this compilation. I think what I loved more about the comp then the actual music, was the idea of punk bands and metal bands playing on the same record, and being cool with it. The Impulse Manslaughter tracks are totally awesome, the Heaven and hell bust is funny as hell. My favorite tracks by far are the A.M.Q.A. tracks, because the stuff is so fast and catchy. Most people I know hate Sacred Denial, but the vox on this stuff remind me a bit of Gang Green, plus I have a weakness in my heart for NJ crossover shit. The Attitude stuff is live, and sorta is filler. The songs are to long, by this time I was over them moving on beyond Attitude Adjustment. Condemned, and Attitude later merged and became, yup you guessed it... Condemned Attitude.
I think I originally bought a copy of this from Charlie Infections band Psycho when they played a show in Albany with Sheer Terror in around 1989-1990. This came out on Ever Rat, Medusa who also released the Coven LP, and a bunch of other stuff in the late 80's.

JIM JONES AND THE KOOL-ADE KIDS trust me LP (1986)

1.force of habit
2.numbing process
3.manufactured christ
4.creeping brown deth
5.society for creative pain
6.victim to the prey
7.last grave at dimbaza
8.attack position
9.silenced
10.never enough

I originally heard these guys on an old Maximum Rock n Roll radio show in the 80's. I couldn't believe how brutally metal they sounded, but had a goofy fucking name that still had some social relevance at the time. This was truly punk as fuck metal. The guitars and drums have a total Celtic Frost/Hellhammer sound. I'm not sure these guys were familiar with the bands at that time(though its hard to believe by the sound, that they weren't). If you love Celtic Frost, or even the 1st Sheer Terror LP, you'll kill for this one. More underground music from the great state of Michigan.
I've owned this record three times. Originally selling it in my first purge of record sales in around '93. I think I recently acquired it again through my buddy/ex band mate Jim MacNaughton. I Forgot how great this was. The band had a second LP slated to come out but couldn't find a "deal". Known as The "Contrafusion" demos these songs were even more metal sounding, as the band got a different singer. Don't miss this, or let the band name scare you away. This is a rager. Awesome lyrics that had my mind in the right place 20 years ago. Leave a comment if you remember these guys, or dig this shit.

"never enough"
break from the norm to fight for your rights
no peer pressure no more cliques no more labels
things have changed your ideals are a cover
practice what you preach stupid hypocrites

I go into the show you look me up and down
judge me by your standards as if you were my parents
is my hair to long? should I have a circle A on my back?
will I never score enough points to make your hardcore standard?

I hate war, poverty and death
I thought my values were in the right place
you don't even bother to ask what I think
you got me figured out by just one look
yeah you got me figured out, you know everything
and you'll never take the time to know me
hidden safe within your clique
use your rags to distort images
something meant for benefit used to destroy
we're not going to let your narrow minds hold us back
we'll do it without you!

AGNOSTIC FRONT-live at CBGB's (1988)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This is seriously some of the funniest, most amazing live banter on a record ever(a close second only to Sheer Terror live stuff). Some shit about "people getting killed", etc. The talking and banter between songs is just as good as the tight hardcore/punk thats played on this LP. This is my second favorite AF record (of course after Victim in pain). These guys played NYC hardcore at its best.
I First saw AF in around 1985-86 in Albany NY with YOT (GBH was supposed to headline the bill, but canceled). I remember when I first walked into the VFW hall Agnostic Front were doing a sound check playing Metallica's "Seek and destroy". I later remember talking to Stigma as he sold me a t shirt(that I still have).. dude was funny as hell.
A few years later in around 1987-88 I saw them at the Stone in S.F. The show was super packed with skinheads, who started screaming pro Nazi shit, and giving the band the Nazi salute. The vocalist, Roger started screaming at them that they were retarded and that he was Cuban, and that AF were not a Racist band.

NO MERCY-widespread bloodshed/ love runs red (1987)

1.Evil
2.Crazy but Proud
3.Master of No Mercy
4.Day of the Damned
5.Controlled by Hatred
6.I'm Your Nightmare
7.Widespread Bloodshed - Love Runs Red
8.My Own Way of Life
9.Waking the Dead

No Mercy were a side project of Mike Muir of the Suicidal Tendencies. Later other N.M. members ended up joining the Suicidals(the guitarist I think).
This is some kick ass speed metal/crossover stuff that to this day still can't be mimicked. I love the record cover, everything about this record is sick.
I bought my copy of this LP after visiting L.A. from S.F.,and going to a "punk" show that seemed more like a gang war. The Suicidals Vs. the LADS. I was scared shitless, and used to gangs like Jaks in S.F.
Members of both gangs would enter the pit alone, sort of enticing the enemy to enter, or get to close, then others would rush in, throw punches, kick, etc. then sort of separate and hang on different sides of the pit (chilling against the walls). There seemed to be no security, and it was some of the scariest, most violent shit I'd ever seen...

14.Oatmeal II
15.1987 Schizoid Sam
16.Pattonstien's Disease

Killer crossover that was far ahead of its time. Listening to this now, its easy to see how awesome this obscure Chicago band must have been to see live. Fast, raw, yet catchy...with plenty of songs that start off with bass riffs.
I bought this one when I lived in S.F. Some cool punk neighbors of mine on Fell street named Eric and Janice turned me on to this LP one day. It was on Underdog records.

MACE-the evil in good LP (1987)

1 Gutripper
2 Intent to Kill
3 The Evil In good
4 Daddy's Girl
5 War
6 Thinning the Herd
7 Choose Your God
8 When the Screaming Stops
9 Poison Gasses
10 Blonde Obsession

Mace were from Washington State, and formed in 1985. This is the bands second LP and came out on Black Dragon records. Rumor has it that guitarist Hills was friends with and later produced such acts as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice and chains etc. Don't let that scare you, as this is some humorous, monster speed metal with heavy punk influences(the vocals mostly). It turned off most punks cos of its shredding solos, and turned off many metal heads due to its punk styled approach to the singing.
A band I was in that started in 1989 called Intent stole our name from a partial song title of these guys. I recall bringing the name Intent to Kill to a band practice (after snaking it off of the back cover of this record), and having the band decline the name but somehow shortening it to Intent. If the link takes you to a dead page when you click it, try copy and pasting the link. I'm just switching over to mediafire and still learning...

Broken Bones were a great UK based punk band comprised of Bones, the guitarist from Discharge after he'd left the legendary unit. Broken Bones were really the next best thing to Discharge back then to us kids who were watching Discharge turn into a "rock" band.
For some reason Broken Bones T shirts, patches, etc were worn by many of us metal heads in the mid 80's(I wore a BB sticker on the back of my leather).
I remember picking up this cassette at the record vault in SF at a King Diamond record signing, it spent months in my walkman as I skated the steep streets of San Fransisco.

The band is NOT grind.... this is crossover hardcore from the suburbs of sunny Southern California. I traded a romper room rejects demo through the mail back in 1988 with a band member of M.G. for this tape. Years later I got another copy from a friend in a collection I bought...sorta weird.
Rumor has it that Eric Wood (Man Is The Bastard)was the singer of this band. The band featured the girl who went on to be in Pussy Galore on bass or guitar. I really used to love collecting demos after reading a good review in MRR.

Desecration demo (1985)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1.Intro/psycho
2.deaths revenge
3.Halloween

Featuring pre Corrupted Morals/ex Possessed members(maybe up to three guys), this demo is a true classic, and its unfortunate to have only 3 songs on it.
I saw these guys once at the Farm in S.F. opening up for some punk hardcore bands with my buddy's Zoran and Kenny Donnovan. We had no idea who these metal heads were, but loved em just the same. I picked this up then.
This stuff has the fixings of Desecrations other bay area counter parts of the time, Sacrilege, Possessed, and Exodus. Features the drummer of Possessed playing as a "session" drummer for this demo. Killer death/thrash that will not disappoint, It sucks they never put out a proper release.

Thrashing Hectic Circle were from Livermore California, a place that I lived for about a year with my buddy Kenny. Kenny's step dad Wayne had a industrial garage next store to another body shop that was owned by the father of one of the T.H.C. guys. They practiced there, as did my band(romper room rejects), next door.
These guys played a raging style of speedcore that was influenced as much by metal, as Punk. We would do shows at Wilson's garage, and had wild parties with metal and punk bands through out the area. I was lucky enough to see THC a few times.... and always popped my head in to see them practice. I listened to this demo over and over and over again in my 1972 Gremlin as I drove the streets of Livermore/Dublin/Pleasinton. Listening to this gem brings back very sweet memories.
