I was turned on to this band by my neighbor/friend Eric Meade when I lived in San Francisco, back in the mid 1980's. Eric turned me on to so much in the way of obscure music back then. He was one of the most open minded people I'd ever met.
I think I heard the LP first, and then later mail ordered this ep from the band directly(thanks MRR). These guys played some Some pretty Brutal crossover, that I could relate to in every way. It was a great merging of metal and punk. Listening back its so ahead of its time. This records been with me a long time now. The band was always pretty obscure, and really under-rated hailing from Chicago. The vocals are pretty harsh sounding considering the time period. Back in the 80's it was sort of a no brainer that a 7" was worth picking up if it had 8 or more songs on it. Still hard to believe that I used to order 7"s for $2.50ppd. Where have all the good times gone?

these guys were brilliant. I think the death of them was signing to Nuclear blast records.
ReplyDeletethank you for the post.
I already know this is going to rule because I've been listening to "He Who Laughs Last..." all week. Thanks for reading my mind!
ReplyDeleteFuckin nice! They sound excellent. Even more badass is that these dudes lived around my neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteThe He Who Laughs Last LP is a great one, too.
ReplyDeleteBeer City Records attempted to do a discography a few years ago, but a couple of band members were claiming copyright bullshit and would not allow certain songs that "they wote" to be on the discography, so it ended up being a handful of studio tracks, and a fair live recording -- and terrible cover art.
The CD sold less than 200 copies. Nearly 1,800 unsold copies sit in a warehouse in Milwaukee. The real funny thing is they told Mike Beeer that "after the CD sells 30,000 copies, we'll have to renegotiate for higher royalties." Ha, ha.
Too bad they could not get all of the studio stuff on one disc, but once again, the rock star attitude means the fans lose out.
These guys are bigger in their own minds than in real life!
yo i still don't have my records and can't get in touch with you via email. lemme know what's up. -max f.
ReplyDeleteDudes were great. its a shame they let underground music go to their heads.
ReplyDeleteA couple years ago Avskum from Sweden played in Chicago...the singer from Impulse Manslaughter showed up-he seemed a really burned out dude...he called one of the members of the opening bands a nasty name(of the sexist variety)...I don't know why because I was outside for a few minutes- but then I heard the uproar people were shouting at him and others were defending him...the upshot is that he got booted from the show before Avskum played.
ReplyDeletethat sounds hilarious. would have loved to see that. Sorta think its weird that he got booted for screaming a name at someone. Sounds like an emo show in the 1990's.
ReplyDeleteNate
Total bullshit. I got tossed out of an emo show once just for breaking a girl's jaw. The 90s sucked!
ReplyDeleteim excited for the listen. ive had 'he who laughs last, laughs alone' on rotation for what seems like a year!
ReplyDeletethanks man.
the "logical end" lp was their finest moment for me. i had it three times, unfortunately parted with my walkthrufyre copy and settled with pink vinyl nuclear blast one. i was a dumb kid back then and sold or traded a clear vinyl version of "he who laughs last...". anyway, their Stones and Motorhead covers ruled my world
ReplyDeleteThe Beer City story ... ignore it. Person who wrote that knows nothing.

I think the effect of commercialization on the music became an increasingly contentious issue
