The REPOS/FOURTEEN OR FIGHT Split 7"

Fourteen Or Fight Side:
1.Revenge of the latchkey kids
2.Agressive collector
3.combo amp a go go
4.godless America
The Repos Side:
5.no control
6.one last time
7.fugitive family 2
8.haha hardcore
9.alright!?!
10.fast decline
11.hollow trees

I put this one out many years ago on my label.  Pretty sure it was both bands first vinyl appearance.  I remember hearing the Repos demo in my bedroom in Albany NY… I was floored.  Totally reminded me of Septic Death meets Infest in some really warped way. So When I talked to Aaron from the Repos and he told me they were supposed to do a split with Fourteen Or Fight and it couldn't happen for whatever reason I jumped at the chance to help them out by releasing it.  Fourteen Or Fight was my old room mate Jon Arends hc band after Charles Bronson.  The band also featured Frank on vox who years earlier fronted the legendary MK Ultra.  The copy I have up on here is the limited to 30 copies or something… how can you go wrong with an 11 song 7".  Enjoy and Share

TERROR-Evil Of Terror 7"(1989)

1.dictator ship
2.timer
3.breaker
4.no see mine

Years before any one else was calling themselves Terror, these guys were playing as Terror.  I know very little about these Japanese thrashers.  My old Albany friend Louis J gave me this one back in the early 1990's.  All he said was "enjoy this Japanese rarity".   He was the first guy I'd ever met who went balls out collecting Japanese punk hardcore records.  It was like an addiction for the guy.  Even back in 1989 he was sometimes paying $75 for records that I thought he was insane for buying.  Turned out he was way ahead of his time.
The record is chock full of speed and blur.  I'd say they were influenced by the likes of SOB, Outo, Gauze, etc.  The vocals are what make this for me.  I love the Totally raw recording on this ep.  The songs are all like 3-4 mins long, but the only one with any metal influence that I'm here is "no see mine".  The others are all raging hardcore tunes with some cool breakdowns to boot.  Enjoy.

1.strike transmission
2.new design
3.control is lost
Killers side:
4.blind eyed
5.at least we die
6.product
7.now this...

I had a long relationship with the dudes from 9 Shocks Terror. I first saw them at a radio show that my buddy Jim MacNaughton did at WRPI in Troy NY. The band didn't have any records out yet, but were traveling with an all female Japanese hc band called the Gaia. I was completely blown away by the ferocity that 9 Shocks provided at the show played to maybe 8 of us. The dudes were as old as I was, and still beat on their equipment like they hated everything and everyone. They gave me hope. I asked them to do a split with my band Devoid Of Faith... and they were into it. later on I'd asked them about this split as I'd become good friends with Mike from the Killers. Both bands were into the idea, and were really stoked at the idea I had to have Pushead do the cover art. I was talking a lot with him back then because he was doing DOF art, rex, etc. He was into the idea of doing the art, and I was shocked when he gave the okay for Mike(the killers)to do the back cover. Mike did a really good Pushead back then. After putting the two in touch with each other a relationship was born. This one didn't take as long to come out as most people would have expected. I did 3000, 1000 on blue, one thousand on green and 1000 on orange.

3.the party's over
4.bored to death
5.take back your life
6.get rowdy
7.life of misery
8.at what compromise
9.crooked teeth
10.I hate fashion

CTS were a Boston hardcore band that formed out of a bunch of kids that were going to college together. Paul the guitarist was from NJ and played in Tear It Up... we'd played some shows together. He was the only guy I really knew from CTS. He was an awesome guitarist and had a killer knack for doing artwork. He sent me the CTS demo tape, and even though it was about 4 mins in length, I was floored and wanted more. I immediately contacted Paul and asked him to do a 7" on my label. He was into it, and had a clear vision of exactly what he wanted the record to look like and sound like. I gave him pretty much free reign to do whatever he wanted. The record sold out pretty quickly, and I think we pressed between 1,500-2000 copies. I had a really awesome relationship with the band that sparked one 7", a 12" and a 10" on Gloom. Best dudes ever... nicest guys in hc during that time period. This is pure thrash.

9. Hacked To Pieces
10.Falling Apart
11.Faster To Nowhere
12.Last Breath
13.Days Are Numbered
14.Beginning Of The End

This post is Dedicated to Mark Sheehan Who sang for Out Cold. RIP.
Mark passed away this weekend at the young age of 41. He left behind a immense & great history of music. Out Cold played brutally fast thrash/hardcore that through the years never really changed nor "progressed" in the shitty way that a lot of our favorite bands do. Think AC/DC, Slayer and Motorhead to get my point. They pretty much always stayed true to the path, and kept putting out great records that didn't leave their fans going huh??? Out Cold were the same way in that regard. Always thrashing on at one speed ahead.
Out Cold Formed in 1989 out of a Suburban MA. town that was about 30 miles from Boston. I hadn't heard them until maybe around 1994? Once I did, I wrote to them(sending a DOF tape)asking to do a split 7" with my band Devoid Of Faith. I got letter back from them saying that they couldn't because they had so many other things going on.
There really weren't to many bands doing what they were doing then. That time period was pretty stale for fast music. I never got to see Out Cold. Every time I did try or travel, they would cancel. After a while I sorta gave up. My thoughts go out to the people who knew him and were close to him. RIP buddy.

5.sedation
6.chaos
7.contradiction
8.oatmeal

I was turned on to this band by my neighbor/friend Eric Meade when I lived in San Francisco, back in the mid 1980's. Eric turned me on to so much in the way of obscure music back then. He was one of the most open minded people I'd ever met.
I think I heard the LP first, and then later mail ordered this ep from the band directly(thanks MRR). These guys played some Some pretty Brutal crossover, that I could relate to in every way. It was a great merging of metal and punk. Listening back its so ahead of its time. This records been with me a long time now. The band was always pretty obscure, and really under-rated hailing from Chicago. The vocals are pretty harsh sounding considering the time period. Back in the 80's it was sort of a no brainer that a 7" was worth picking up if it had 8 or more songs on it. Still hard to believe that I used to order 7"s for $2.50ppd. Where have all the good times gone?

DEVOID OF FAITH purpose lost 10" (1997)

Devoid Of Faith started out of the ashes of Affirmative Action, and Intent in 1992 in Albany NY. Jim MacNaughton, Kevin O'Sullivan and myself had known each other for some years from playing hardcore shows together. Jim moved to Albany from New Paltz NY(A.A. were from there), and one day at a comic book shop I worked at he asked me what I was planning on doing musically(because Intent had just broken up). We decided to Jam with Kevin because he was the best drummer in the area, and also a dear friend. We recorded a demo as a three piece on a 4 track, and later added Mark Telfian who lasted a few shows and a 7"(that he was out of tune on). We then added Jason D who was a band mate of mine in Monster X. We recorded a slew of records and played a bunch of shows to virtually no one.
One day Jim came to practice all giddy with a letter from Pushead, who gushed over DOF, and expressed interest in doing a record with us on his label. We were all fans of his old label, his old band, and the mans art. We were beyond stoked, so we of course said yes. The record took years to get out. He sent us some money, we recorded and mixed it, and he later released it to his fanclub with a very limited amount being pressed. The record caused much tension, and strained our relationship with him. It Sucks that that happened.
This was the last record Kevin played on with us, before he moved to California. Listening back to it, I sort of get bummed on the low mix we gave the vox. The guitars are perfect, I just wish the vocals were louder, Jim and his vocals made the band.
This mix/mastered version was done by Steve Heritage at morris sound.
Enjoy.

I saw Psycho in Albany in 1989 with Sheer Terror and Stigmata. Pretty sure that when I saw Psycho these guys they had lost the singer, and were a three piece perhaps? I recall the drummer by this time was wearing a head phone set with a microphone that allowed him to sing and play drums at the same time. It was a weird thing to see a hardcore band do. I was sorta turned off at first when I saw them setting up, but once they started playing their wacky brand of fierce thrashcore I knew they were awesome. I bought their record at the show due to their speed and tightness. I recall the Troy kids who came to the show sorta standing there and not knowing how to react to Psycho.
After the show my friends who put on the show went to pay the bands, and were short the guarantee that Sheer Terror were promised. S.T. got pissed and started saying stuff like "Why don't we ask your mommy for the money". They got pretty demanding, and if I recall correctly drove my buddies to an ATM so that they could be payed what they were promised. The entire episode was pretty hilarious.
The second song on this tape sounds like a different band(different vox, and poppy sorta). The other songs are killer thrash songs that sorta remind me of Poison Idea vocally.
I left off the live side of this tape.

CLEANSE THE BACTERIA compilation LP (1985)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Side one
1. 7 Seconds: "Regress No Way", "We're Gonna Fight"
2. Civil Dissident: "20th Century Holocaust Pt. II, Death for a Buzz"
3. Instigators: "53rd State", "The Blood is on Your Hands, Free (You're Not)"
4. Siege: "Sad But True", "Cold War", "Walls"
5. Corrosion of Conformity: "Kiss of Death"
6. Crude SS: "Nazi Go Home", "Spräng Alla Kommunhus"
7. Akutt Innleggelse: "Tenk NÃ¥!"
8. The Execute: "Slash" (Live)

Side two
1. Part 1: "Black Mass"
2. Poison Idea: "Typical", "Die on Your Knees"
3. Genocide Express: "Genocide Express", "Factory"
4. Inferno: "Wir Sind Schon Tot", "Freitod"
5. Mob 47: "Fred & Rättvisa", "Sjuk Värld", "Nedrusta Nu", "Snuten Styr"
6. Septic Death: "Terrorain", "Change"
7. Enola Gay: "Grav Et hul", "Enola Gay"
8. Holy Dolls: "Beast of the Apocalypse"
9. Zyklome A: "People Die", "Angry Face"
10. Extrem: "Nazi Raus"

I Can't really remember where I discovered this classic compilation, but I'd guess it was in Thrasher Magazine, or maybe Maximum Rock n Roll. I know that when I saw the artwork I was in aw, and it looked so metal to me that I knew you couldn't go wrong buying the record. This one is as important to my varied international taste in music, as the Peace comp, or the Welcome to 1984 compilation.
I was already familiar with and had seen C.O.C., 7 Seconds, Septic Death, and Poison Idea, but being exposed to the likes of Crude SS, Siege, Inferno, Mob 47, the Execute, and Extrem was just mind melting back then. I soon was out buying other international compilations, and records by bands throughout the entire world. I think I wrote to every bands address on the back of this record. For me it was the first time I'd written to Holland, Sweden, Austria, and Japan looking to buy punk records & demo's.
Seems so unreal to me 25 years later that we didn't have computers, or cell phones, but instead wrote letters to people who possibly didn't speak the same language, and might not get the letter. We'd just stuff an envelope with a letter, $3 dollars and some stamps in hopes that we would hear back from bands half way across the globe. I spent a lot of time doing this, as most of us did in these days. It truly was difficult to find and expose yourself to new and different music back then. I'd have been lost with out the likes of Pushead, Tim Yo, etc. People who lived outside this bubble clearly thought people like us were crazy to be spending so much time, and obsessing over something that seemed so under the radar.

CASBAH russian roulette 7" (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1. Russian Roulette
2. death metal

I first read about Casbah in one of Pusheads columns back in the mid 80's(Prolly Puszone). The way he described this Japanese thrash metal band I knew I really needed to hear them. It really did take me forever to finally find the ep by these guys, but it was so fucking good that it seemed well worth the wait. I ended up buying it used at Reckless Records on Haight street for pennies. Some metalheads might find this to primitive and raw to be considered metal. To me It borders right on crossover thrash, mixed with maybe Kreator, and them being Japanese just ads to the frenzy. I know when I finally did get this, and blasted it for my buddies like Zoran, and Kenny(who were true metal types), they thought it was a hardcore band. This was one of the few Japanese bands that I had some knowledge over my Japcore fiend friend Louis J. I recall him telling me "dude... If you like this stuff, you are gonna love this". He would then blast the likes of Gism, Gauze, SoB, and Lipcream for me. The second part of the solo in Russian Roulette makes me want to get out my guitar and learn how to play it.

SEPTIC DEATH now that I have your attention, what do I do with it? LP(1985)

My introduction to Septic Death was through the Thrasher skate rock compilation cassettes. Although I lived in S.F. for nearly 3 years back in the mid 80's I only ever saw Septic Death once and unfortunately can't recall to much about them live. They played a benefit for Thrasher Magazine with the Drunk Injuns, Accused, and Beyond Possession. The only band I recall clearly was the Drunk Injuns, and at first I thought they were Septic Death(before they started playing, cos they wore cool skull masks). My buddy Kenny and I were visiting my pal Zoran, and we ended up going to Fog Town which was a skate shop on the upper haight street area that was run by some cool punk dudes. One of The singers from Cause For Alarm worked there. We would go there to buy new trucks and have our boards worked on by the "pros". We saw the flyers for this show, grabbed a few up, and put it in our mental calender to make this a show we needed to see. I was dating this girl "Diane" at this point but she came out to the show from out in the suburbs. She came to the show with her friend Christye, and her boy friend Rob who was this big skinhead that sang for this band Alchemicon. I spent most my time touching and watching Diane, when I should have been watching Septic Death.
Septic Death of course were very influenced by foreign hardcore, and brought that raw energy out for all of us to hear in the U.S. There was so much great American hardcore coming out back then that needing to find or hear stuff out side the U.S. in 1985 wasn't really that necessary to me back then. Another record that I've ended up with multiple copies through the years.
Gotta say I was pretty stoked When Jim my band mate from Devoid Of Faith came to practice in the 90's with a letter from Pushead(singer of Septic Death). Dude was/is a total hero as far as his artwork goes. He wanted to release a record by us on his label. I was so happy, this really felt like the greatest thing that had happened to me musically up til then. good thoughts...

14.VÃ¥r Dagliga Dos
15.Mor & Far
16.The Crippled Brain

These dudes were from Sweden, and played some fast assed thrash that was quirky and weird. Lots of strange circus sounding jazz parts that most hardcore bands wouldn't have the balls to try, because it wasn't the "norm" within the mostly dogmatic thrash scene. All I can compare the bands weird parts to would be the likes of early Victims Family, Rhythm Pigs, and Die Kreuzen. Some of the reg thrash parts remind me of A.O.D. Its incredible to me even 20 years later that these guys had the ability to play this fast, so tight, and so oddly. Totally different then all the dis stuff from Sweden that everyone has been gushing about for years.
I was turned onto these guys by my older Albany Pal Roger Vandusen. He later sang in a band that I played in. The dude was into lots of German, Swedish, and Finnish stuff. He played me the RTs first release from 1985, and I was automatically searching for the bands other releases. Roger had a humongous European record collection, that most of us were in aw of in the 80's. He became pretty disgusted by punk and hardcore by 1992, and smartly dropped out. I ended up with all his Raped Teenagers stuff. Rog turned me on to so much good stuff. I left off song one, the instrumental, as I had a problem with the transfer. Enjoy.

This is a great find from my tape trading days, with other like minded people from around the globe in the 1980's. It was seriously so cool to trade unknown underground punk and metal bands music with people from other places back then. It was a real connection, and took a serious amount of effort to find these people, and to get the trading to begin. It was cool to think about the fact that there was some German guy sitting in Berlin or some place, who was as obsessed with true underground music as you might be, and that he/she was taping you some band you'd never heard from their region of the world. Looking back, I'd never have guessed that we would be where we are now with technology, the internet, etc. It really has made things like tape trading virtually instinct.
Inferno were of course from West Germany... yup back then East Germany was part of Russia, and the two had not become unified again yet.
Inferno were one of the fastest, loudest, rawest bands from that part of Europe. Its easy to see that both Japanese and Swedes later stole parts of their noisy sound and made it part of their own. The band did a slew of great releases, one of the LPs can be found here in my blog, and the most famous release is the Execute split on Pusmort records. I can recall getting this tape, and just listening to it over and over, wishing that I could understand the lyrics, yet knowing the lyrics were about the same bullshit that I was feeling everyday back then.
I did not include all the songs from this tape, as there were countless jams, and 16 seemed to be enough to throw on here. The stuff sounds pretty awesome considering the tape is over 20 years old. Enjoy.

14. Mexicalli

These dudes were an obscure joke crossover band from Portland Oregon. The band first released a demo in around 1985-86, and then this their only album in 1988. The band runs through practically every underground genre including metal, hardcore, jazz, grind, thrash, and punk. Not something one can listen to everyday, but funny as hell, and kooky enough to influence certain powerviolence bands that came out in the 90's.
Think Wehrmacht meets S.O.D. I can remember reading in the bands thanks list, Siege (for the influence), and automatically I started trying to find out who Siege were.
Listening to this record is really all about memories for me. Brings me back to Albany NY after I moved home from S.F. in around 1989. My friend Louis Jakobs had a long haired metal buddy named Roger who really only into metal. Roger traded me This LP and the Infest slave for some metal record that I am having a hard time recalling. Might have been the Hellhammer 12". At any rate, I traded this or sold this record in my second purge, and of course regretted doing so. It wasn't until recently that my Neighbor Artie and I discovered/met this Russian record collector in our neighborhood, who let us come over and browse records (by appointment only). I was able to score this record again for $5. Thanks Ed!

7.Time and tide
8.When the chapter closes
9.Return of frost
10.Mechanical extinction
11.Rock`n`roll conformity
12.Doomsday (Discharge)

Deviated Instinct were from England and part of the early crust/punk scene, forming in 1984. The band later went for a more metal sound, although they had some metal vibes even on this release. But during this time period they could be compared to the likes of Amebix,Electro Hippies, Axegrinder, etc. Burley sounding, and bass heavy music is what one can expect on this release. A friend of mine who was from England, and involved in the crust scene back then told me that you couldn't get within 10 feet of these guys, because they stunk from filth so badly. They took their punk politics, and drunkenness beyond normal means.
Dave and Jack at Erl Records in Albany NY turned me onto these guys. I think I bought the guttural breath LP from them before getting this one. Crazy to look back and think that I could walk into a store and buy this used for $5.99 in 1990. These two clowns turned me on to so much heavy music in the early 90s. I bought all my Carcass, Crossed Out, and Man Is The Bastard releases here under their guidance.

These punk thrashers were from Belgium, and I'm doubting to many people remember them. I originally bought this LP because I thought that that part of Europe was all pretty much the same. Sorry... Yup, thought they were kraut related, and anyone that reads this blog knows that I have a weakness in my heart for Germans, and thrash. The members of this band were between the ages of 16-19 when this LP was recorded, just pups. The band were a straightedge band, though musically or lyrically you couldn't tell. I used to trade letters and got this record from the singer, Bollie. The songs on this obscure and under rated LP are all pretty fast except for the opening first song. The others are all faster than the sound of light. The songs mostly all time in at around 2 mins or more, which is of course long for a hardcore punk band, but works well. The production is raw as hell, and works well with the solos and shit, keeping this from ever feeling metal. Enjoy and comment!

Man I love this record cover, it really just looks so cool. A great drawing indeed, that helped to suck me into these UK noisecore thrashers. I heard this around the same time that I discovered Fear Of God, L'arm, etc. Totally noisy "we don't give a shit" hardcore punk. I loved the bands mix of humor and politics in their music. I think the only downside to them was the lack of bottom end, keeping them from sounding as heavy as they probably actually were. The band was a three piece, that included no bass player, just a vocalist, guitarist, and a drummer. Another great record that came out on the Looney Tunes label, way ahead of its time.
My buddy Louis turned me on to this band as well as so much other great Euro/Japanese records from the 80's. Thanks buddy!
no songs are missing, although only 11 show up in the file, the other two go into other songs. enjoy, and comment.

This is one noisy as hell record. Atavistic were a U.K. crustcore band from the 80's who released this great 7", and another thats called "life during wartime". They later put out a LP that I recall being very disappointed in(they started going for a Motorhead vibe). This rare ep came out on Looney Tunes, and has pretty much been forgotten in time. Both their two 7"s rank up there with the crusty greats (Deviated Instinct, Amebix, etc). This shit was a bit harsher then most the other English bands of the era... A serious wall of heavy, brutal & raw noise is the only way to describe these gents. Each song has some echo guitar leads that just shreek with raw power. This stuff is so raw I can see some black metal fans appreciating it.
I got this as an alternate record when I was ordering punk records from blacklist mailorder out of S.F. in the late 80's or early '90. I remember being semi bummed that I got this when I put it on my turntable back then. Guess it was to heavy/metal for me. Play this shit loud, its just noise.

I know I haven't uploaded many 7" eps on here, but I couldn't ignore this one any longer. True Japanese metal greatness just doesn't get any better than this. The band had a slew of other releases, but lets forget those, because this is tops for them, and Japanese metal from this time period. There are many elements of NWOBHM bands such as Tank, and Maiden in this ep. Add some Motorhead, and Gism with the diy punkish production and packaging and you have the perfect true punk & metal record. This came out on Noise Room.
This is another one that my buddy Louis turned me onto, pretty late if I might add. This was released in 1985, and I don't think I heard it until 1989. Louis and I would drive to the Anthrax, and trash American Style records in CT., and he'd always have some obscure new foreign music blaring from his tape deck. Enjoy!

No Mercy were a side project of Mike Muir of the Suicidal Tendencies. Later other N.M. members ended up joining the Suicidals(the guitarist I think).
This is some kick ass speed metal/crossover stuff that to this day still can't be mimicked. I love the record cover, everything about this record is sick.
I bought my copy of this LP after visiting L.A. from S.F.,and going to a "punk" show that seemed more like a gang war. The Suicidals Vs. the LADS. I was scared shitless, and used to gangs like Jaks in S.F.
Members of both gangs would enter the pit alone, sort of enticing the enemy to enter, or get to close, then others would rush in, throw punches, kick, etc. then sort of separate and hang on different sides of the pit (chilling against the walls). There seemed to be no security, and it was some of the scariest, most violent shit I'd ever seen...
