02.massacra
03.triumph of death
04.horus/aggressor

Hellhammer was of course pre Celtic Frost and hailed from Switzerland. I'd never heard of any music coming out of the country at the time. Both bands had a huge impact on both the black metal scene(which really was pretty non existent at the time), and doom metal. The only other bands I can recall being this "evil" at the time would have been Venom, Mercyful Fate, Bathory, and Slayer. It's also pretty amazing to hear what an impact these dudes had on the crust punk scene.

It was probably the same all over America, but In my high school during the early to mid 1980's there weren't all to many kids who were keen on underground music. I'm dating myself for sure, but back then you really only had three to four different cliques. You had your Jocks, Preps, Heads(or burnouts), and then the weirdos who didn't fit in anywhere. The later were usually like super smart nerds, or weird artfags(some of whom were punk rockers). I was a metalhead for sure, and most my friends were burnouts who hung out in the smoking area between classes, and during lunch and free periods. The music most of these kids were listening to was stuff like Zepplin, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, etc. There was a small group of us at Shaker that were digging on Newer and more underground metal. Stuff like Exodus, Slayer, Metallica, DRI, COC, Destruction, Venom, etc. Not only did the rest of the school think we were freaks, but the heads we were chillin with thought we were sorta fucked up, and couldn't grasp the music. I recall first discovering Hellhammer, and sort of liking it, but then hearing "triumph of death" and being like, this is noise. "I could play this" I thought to myself. There was a kid I recall, I think his name was Mike Kinny. Mike walked around school with a huge Celtic Frost back patch on his denim jacket. Imagine that in 1984-85. Dude was sort of a loner for sure. So cool...

This album is a fierce, under appreciated monster Jem for sure. Coroner hailed From Zürich Switzerland, and played speed thrash metal that has a huge Celtic Frost and Kreator influence. The band put out two vicious demos before releasing this, their debut album. I think anyone listening to this, with any understanding of music history could tell you that the writing, and guitar playing is VERY classical influenced as well. Tons of fast paced galloping mixed with the bands tech style makes this one of my favorite thrash metal records of the late 80's. A true metal masterpiece.
I bumped into this record by mistake at a record store on Haight street (Reckless, or Restless,I forget), and bought it because it was used, and very cheap($3.99). I was way into my German stuff at this time, and mistook the band from being German. Another record I'm glad I ran into. I miss those days of record shopping with Zoran, in San Fransisco.
leave a comment & enjoy.

FEAR OF GOD cassette tape (1988)

5.rubbish planet(no vocals)/Rubbish planet (with vocals)

1.77 punk rock attack from mars
2.world under my fingernail
3.one-day fly

When I first heard Fear of God it was in 1988. I can remember the day clearly, because I'd never heard anything as harsh as it up until then. I was confused as hell, and couldn't believe my ears. The vox sounding like grandfatherly burps, farts, and screams.. seriously noisy as fuck, especially considering the year that this shit came out. This was some of the Lowest Fi stuff I'd ever heard. These guys really helped define the genre of grind.
The band was from Switzerland, and was comprised of punks and metalheads(the bassist was in Messhia I believe?). The singer did the legendary Off the Disk record label. The band released an amazing 21 song ep, and a beautiful looking gatefold LP (that was filled with live stuff).
My friends Louis, Damon, Mike J, and Nick would blast this tape 17 years ago, as we drove around upstate NY using a slingshot to take out McDonalds windows. We loved Fear of God, and hated fast food.
This tape belonged to my buddy Louis who was a world wide tape trader in the 80's. This one he got straight from the band. The cassette includes a lot of stuff, much of it rehearsals and live stuff. I only put two of the five "sets" on here. The first is the rough mix from the ep-demo (1987). The second is a short rehearsal from 1988 featuring a funny sarcastic punk rock song. enjoy.
