NO LABELS- Society's Problem CD 1982-1983

This CD has a whopping 47 songs on it, way to many for me to list.   It consists of the Raleigh, North Carolina bands 1982 Jane Doe demo, a bunch of compilation tracks, and a live set.  Total nerdum for hardcore freaks.  For those unfamiliar No Labels were pre C.O.C. (Woody on Bass, and Reed on Drums).  I had only ever heard a few of the bands comp tracks, and then later on the No Core stuff.  This was a beautiful time for hardcore.  I was still a metal head when this band existed, and didn't start gravitating towards stuff like this until maybe 1984. The band was infamous for their war on Ian Mackaye and the D.C. Straight edge scene. Enjoy the rage!

DISCHARGE-Live at the Farm in S.F. Sept 7th 1986(getting heckeled))

This tape being uncovered I owe to my friend Kevin 'O who I gave the only copy to well over twenty years ago.  He was nice enough to save it, and recently sent it back to me.  My guess is that if I would have kept it, it would be lost in a sea of tapes, or given away to someone else.  I wish I still had the Possessed, and A.A. sets from the gig on tape... they are lost in a sea of tapes for sure. 
The tape is from 1986 at the Farm in SF.  It was the last show Discharge played after touring the U.S.A. on a their sell out LP.   I had no idea that they had put out a bad record, and were touring on it, so me hearing them sounding like this was a complete shock.  I was ready to hear the classic Discharge... I can be heard talking to another dude standing next to me about how they sound worse then Ratt, and wondering if anyone from the Orig lineup is even in the band.  They really were horrible, and within the first song you can hear the crowd chanting fuck you.  Within 10 mins in they give up playing, and for the next 30 mins, random dudes come out on stage to yell at the crowd, and tell them the cops are coming, and that we are closed minded assholes.  Andy Anderson(Attitude Adjustment), and Scotty Verbal Abuse are some of the randoms talking the crowd down.  Seriously a great memory.  The entire farm chanting DRI, DRI, DRI, DRI...In hopes that DRI who had opened would come back out and play.  Turns out that when Discharge came back out to give it another go, DRI walked up with a trash can full of garbage and threw it at the band.  Members of the band were actually crying because of the reaction.  Years later My friend Jim MacNaughton told me he saw them at La'Mar or something in NY, and the same thing happened.  That would have been at the beginning of the tour.  Hard to believe they toured like this. The recording was done on a little walkmen type tape player, but sounds awesome.  There are only a few songs played, most the time of this tape is the great banter by roadies, and SF scene dudes.  Pretty sure nothing else in the world exists like this. Years before any one else was calling themselves Terror, these guys were playing as Terror.  I know very little about these Japanese thrashers.  My old Albany friend Louis J gave me this one back in the early 1990's.  All he said was "enjoy this Japanese rarity".   He was the first guy I'd ever met who went balls out collecting Japanese punk hardcore records.  It was like an addiction for the guy.  Even back in 1989 he was sometimes paying $75 for records that I thought he was insane for buying.  Turned out he was way ahead of his time.
The record is chock full of speed and blur.  I'd say they were influenced by the likes of SOB, Outo, Gauze, etc.  The vocals are what make this for me.  I love the Totally raw recording on this ep.  The songs are all like 3-4 mins long, but the only one with any metal influence that I'm here is "no see mine".  The others are all raging hardcore tunes with some cool breakdowns to boot.  Enjoy.

I haven't listened to this LP in a really long time.  I originally bought it at the Record Vault on Polk street in San Fransisco in around 1985 or 1986.  I had no idea what they sounded like, but was told I should buy it by Andy Airborne who sang for Attitude Adjustment at the time.  He worked at the shop on weekends, and told me Anti were a heavy influence on Attitude Adjustment.  I was sold on that and the art work.  Upon getting back to my apartment to listen to the LP I was somewhat disappointed by what I heard.  The band played a more mid paced punk style rather then the thrashy HC that I was sorta expecting.  I'd say if you crossed the Circle Jerks with Adolescents you'd understand the sound I'm talking about.  The sound has def grown on me.  Its melodic as hell punk, with snotty vocals, and kick ass catchy guitar solos that make me happy when hearing this.  Still not sure if Andy was fucking with me or not...but I sorta think the bands politics and punk attitude might have had a influence on AA.  I did take a lot of his recommendations, and most panned out and kept me a happy little thrasher.  The band was from L.A., and with this release have nailed the L.A. punk sound.

I was turned onto these guys by a kid i'd met at Worlds Records in Albany NY maybe around 1989.  I'd just moved back to the area from SF, and really hadn't met to many Albany punk/hc people yet.  The guy I met wasn't from Albany, he was from Pittsfield Massachusetts(45 mins away).  Back then when one saw another person in say a 7 Seconds shirt on or something, you'd approach them and make some conversation(seems like that sorta thing doesn't really happen anymore).  At any rate  this dude and myself exchanged info, and I ended up going to a couple of shows in Western MA with him.  One was in a basement, with a band called Wishful Thinking, and G-Man.  This guy introduced me to some of his friends, and a few months later sent me a copy of the outpatients demo, and a Wishful Thinking 7".

I'm pretty sure I still have the demo, but haven't unearthed it yet(or seen it in over a decade).  This CD compiles the bands early stuff, including the demo.  I love this stuff..raw silly sounding thrashed out punk hardcore.

Here is another obscure classic hardcore release from the 90's.  Eucharist were from Richmond Virginia, and put out this 12" LP, and another four compilation tracks.  Unfortunately the band never did a demo. The band did an entire U.S. tour with Suppression, and played the North East pretty regularly.  My connection to this is that one of my best friends, Mark Telfian formed this band after leaving my band Devoid Of Faith, and moving from Albany down south.  Mark played on many a records including, Conniption, DOF, Death Squad, By The Throat, Hail Mary and Limp Wrist.  This one is by far his most triumphant recording.  The songs are short, tight, and very harsh sounding.  Totally brutal stuff indeed.  I always thought the band was under the influence of Econochrist meets Citizens Arrest or Rorschach.  When I mentioned this to Mark he laughed and said "Negative Approach dude".  This came out on Mountain, a label run by Chris Jenson.  Enjoy!

This is a band that while I was living in S.F. I think many of us took for granted, because they played shows in the Bay Area all the time. I saw these guys a lot, seemed like they were on every show. Sometimes I wasn't even paying attention to them. They always sorta reminded me of a younger, poor mans Adolescents. I bought the 12" before actually ever seeing them. The reason I bought it was because I noticed there was a song titled "fight back". I was pretty sure this must be a cover of the Discharge song with the same name. Nope, not even close. I was pretty closed minded at this point in my life, and really just wanted loud and fast, so this 12" sorta let me down when i plunked the needle down on the platter. It took me years to rediscover this. Its great.. melodic, and catchy as fuck punk rock. Pretty sure these guys were from San Jose(although the addy on the back jacket is from somewhere else). It was produced by someone from the Faction(not Steve C). Enjoy.

This came out the year I graduated high school. A crushing hardcore classic for sure that had the musical influence of Discharge, and took the political views of Crass, Chumbawamba, etc. I wasn't aware of two many animal rights bands back then, it was sort of a radical idea for sure. The tape made the rounds in the tape trading community for over 20 years. It was an obscure beaut that prolly had more influence on bands over seas then it did over here in the U.S.(until more recently I guess). I had a tape copy dubbed from my buddy Louis, who mainly loved anything from outside the states. He loved these guys even though they were from California. The tape disappeared years ago when in a move, I probably gave it away to a friend. Thanks to Charles for this one. The o.g. tape came from him along with a letter from the band, and lyric sheets.

These guys played pretty much poppy rock n roll with punk licks thrown in. The band is similiar to some early GG Allin in its lyrical approach and sound. Pretty certain that they were from Philadelphia. I recall the reason I bought the LP was because of the Condemned To Death connection. The guitarist of C2D(Tim Omen) had moved back to the East coast from S.F. and formed this "shock rock" band. My friend Zoran and I heard about it, and immediately felt the need to find it. I'd say the stuff was sorta ahead of its time. The only other bands I recall doing stuff like this at the time were the Mentors, and GG, and maybe Gwar. I think I was sorta in aw, and kind of revolted by the songs. My buddy Zoran on the other hand was able to find the humor in the record. It took me twenty years to pull this out of where I'd filed it, and to give it another spin. It was then that I understood how awesome of a record that this was(especially for the time period). These guys could get away with touring with the likes of Turbonegro if they were around today. I'm pretty sure this was the only LP they did, and later followed it up with a 7", then broke up.

Sacred Denial were from Clifton NJ(a suburb that is very close to where I'm living now). The band had a pretty bad reputation, mainly due to the fact that they were from the great state of Jersey. New Jersey hardcore back then was known for its nerdy, cheese ball approach, and its wackiness that wasn't always as clever as the dudes playing it maybe thought it was. I avoided most NJ hardcore 'cept for maybe A.O.D. for a long time.
The crazy thing about this record is how unbelievably awesome it is. Its generic in every sense of the word, but just thrash's through as though it was Jerry's Kids "my world". Seriously... this is a real under the radar, ignored, obscure tooth and chip thrash record that should be enjoyed by hardcore lovers worldwide. "what religion" , "pissed at the world" and "pro-liar" are tasty, catchy rippers that are the stand outs for me on this yummy platter.
This is exactly what hardcore was meant to sound like in the 1980's. Don't be fooled by the bands other records though.. they just don't compare, not even by 50%.
I was turned onto these guys while living in S.F. by my neighbor and friend Eric Meade. Dude made me tapes loaded with some of the best hc I've to this day ever heard. Thanks Eric, I owe you for sure.

Deadless Muss are another of my favorite Japanese hardcore bands. A buddy of mine(Louis J)is responsible for turning me onto most all the early Japanese hardcore I've ever heard. I recall him playing this one for me via cassette on our way to see Poison Idea at the Anthrax. It was a two and a half hour drive there, and it turned out that Poison Idea had either canceled or the show was the week before or something. We sat through some other shit bands instead, and went to Trash American Style Record Shop. Remember, this was way before cell phones and the internet. If a band canceled or something happened, it was a bit harder to get the word out. Any way, Louis had like 3 tapes full of Japanese hardcore from all the 7"s and flexi's that he'd been collecting. It kept the 5 hour drive entertaining and educational. His words about these guys was something about them being a bunch of 16 year old kids who could play better then D.R.I.

These guys were a obscure hardcore punk band from San Antonio Texas. I first heard them in the late 80's on the compilation LP "cottage cheese from the lips of death". From what I know they only appeared on that comp, and this 7" ep. I think people from outside the area were pretty offended by the bands record cover, record title, and song titles/lyrics. From what I've heard people from the area, and people that knew them knew that this record was a total joke, and they were just trying to have fun(yeah I know, at womens expense), and trying to offend people. It's no wonder people could give two shits about this record... their loss, because this record is a heafty punk rock ripper.

Devoid Of Faith started out of the ashes of Affirmative Action, and Intent in 1992 in Albany NY. Jim MacNaughton, Kevin O'Sullivan and myself had known each other for some years from playing hardcore shows together. Jim moved to Albany from New Paltz NY(A.A. were from there), and one day at a comic book shop I worked at he asked me what I was planning on doing musically(because Intent had just broken up). We decided to Jam with Kevin because he was the best drummer in the area, and also a dear friend. We recorded a demo as a three piece on a 4 track, and later added Mark Telfian who lasted a few shows and a 7"(that he was out of tune on). We then added Jason D who was a band mate of mine in Monster X. We recorded a slew of records and played a bunch of shows to virtually no one.
One day Jim came to practice all giddy with a letter from Pushead, who gushed over DOF, and expressed interest in doing a record with us on his label. We were all fans of his old label, his old band, and the mans art. We were beyond stoked, so we of course said yes. The record took years to get out. He sent us some money, we recorded and mixed it, and he later released it to his fanclub with a very limited amount being pressed. The record caused much tension, and strained our relationship with him. It Sucks that that happened.
This was the last record Kevin played on with us, before he moved to California. Listening back to it, I sort of get bummed on the low mix we gave the vox. The guitars are perfect, I just wish the vocals were louder, Jim and his vocals made the band.

Yup, Porn Orchard started off as a punk band that recorded a shit load of demo tapes and toured the states pretty much non stop in the 1980's. These guys were from Athens Georgia, and it seemed you could come across their demo reviews, and ads in all the punk zines of the time. I think I first recall reading about them in Suburban Voice.
I got this demo from friend/and band mate Jim Mac from Devoid Of Faith. Jim was the bassist/vocalist of DOF. He was also the driver/owner of the van that DOF toured around in, so Jim also controlled the music. He would force us to listen to way to much Mojo Nixon, Poison Idea, Johnny Cash, GG Allin, Discharge, and yup I can recall this Porn Orchard tape being on endless rotation as well.
The demo is the 3rd from the band who started in around 1985. It was recorded on a 4 track in the bands house. Enjoy!

What's pretty incredible to me, and many a hardcore punk record collectors is what had happened to, and why the Rock O Rama Record label went from releasing amazing punk records in the early 1980's, to then releasing white power stuff such as Skrewdriver, Brutal Attack, etc? Its mind boggling really. The early stuff on the label was this sorta obscure scandi-German noisy punk rock that even to this day is influencing newer and younger punk bands from around the globe. Stosstrup were one of those raw noisy punk bands. Other early releases include Skeptix, Ohl, Bastards, Razors, Appendix, Tarveet Kadet, Riistetyt, etc.
When I moved to the city, and gas prices started going through the roof, I made the decision to trade an old classic muscle car for some old and classic punk records. I made a weird record trade with My friend Dan, who back in the late 80's-90s was known in Albany as "Gerber Skin"(because of his baby like appearance). As a collector I'd traded records many a times, but Dan was interested in something else. Yup, a 1967 dodge dart GT that I had owned, and was just letting it sit to collect dust and mold. We made the trade, I ended up with this tasty slab of wax that came out out on the Rock O Rama Label. I ended up with a bunch of skinhead rock n roll records. Dan ended up with my car and a Slayer tape in the tape deck. He later painted the car and made a brother proud. It was a good trade for the both of us.
The cover art on this record always looked so brutal to me. I was so happy to finally have it.

Well, I purchased this record originally thinking it was the Subhumans U.K. , I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there were more than just one Subhumans. The band I accidentally found out were Canadian.
The music on this LP is so fucking poppy and catchy that it makes you want to dance and sing. Its a flawless punk record from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, its still raw and punk as fuck. The lyrics are very political and to me at the time were pretty meaningful. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hear this in 1980 when it originally came out. I didn't catch it til around 1986 when it was repressed on cd records. When you think about the fact that this came out in 1980, its sorta unreal. The band was very much ahead of their time.
I've always said that the Templars totally stole these guys sound. I'm okay with that... I love both bands. Seriously give this a spin and tell me yo don't hear the Templars and maybe even some Leatherface.

I was turned onto the Detonators by the guitar player of Operation Ivy in perhaps 1986-87. The Dude was known as Lint back then, and was at almost every punk show in the Bay Area back then. I can recall him always buzzing around the audience at Gilman Street and just chatting it up with fellow punks. Lint had a true love for the scene back then, it was obvious when you talked to him. In one conversation I had with him about older California punk bands, he mentioned the Detonators. He gasped in aw when I told him I'd never heard them, and then went on to tell me that how his band was hugely influenced by them more than any other bands.
I later bought this LP at a record shop in Livermore California, and realized I had actually seen the Detonators at the Farm.
The Detonators started off as an L.A. punk band, then moved to Portland Oregon. When I listen back to this I can hear some skinhead influence on the band. Side 2 has riffs that really do seem stolen by op iv. Enjoy the core.

FLITOX no1 7" (1986)

Flitox were an average French punk band. France has never really been all to known for having the best music come out of the country. This is the bands debut record. They put out a LP that was good as well. Mid paced, Catchy L.A. sounding punk, with lots of melodic guitar leads is how I'd describe the bands sound. I don't think I'd ever had discovered this record if it weren't for my band mate/friend Michael Roy. Michael was a French punk who was living in the states illegally in 1986-88, working construction/painting houses. My buddy Zoran met him at a show, and brought him back to my apt in S.F. to try out as bassist in our band the Romper Room Rejects. When I told Michael that I'd never heard any good French punk, he somehow came up with this record for me, bringing it over to my pad for me to listen to. After I acknowledged that there might be a few ok French punk bands, my buddy told me I could keep the record. It is hard to believe that its been with me for 23 years now. I have no idea what happened to Mr. Roy, I haven't heard from or seen him in over 20 years. Cheers my friend!

SKEPTIX peace force 7" (1983)

I recently pulled this one out after listening to one of the bands Christmas songs on some silly UK Christmas punk compilation(Have a Rotten Christmas). Peace force is total Adolescents worship mixed with an tinge of some street punk oi. This is the bands second release. They later released an LP on the Rock o Rama label(famous for putting out Skrewdriver records). Dudes formed during the original first wave of punk in 1978 under the name Vermin.
I remember I initially bought this record in the mid 80's because I'd heard the guitarist replaced Bones in Discharge. I'm shocked I didn't destroy this after seeing Discharge at the Farm in S.F. in 85-86. They were playing all the cock rock stuff they'd wrote and recorded. It was terrible, but funny as hell to watch. They were booed off the stage with punks throwing beer bottles, etc at them. Seriously like 800 kids yelling "play the old shit"! "play the old shit"! DRI, DRI, DRI(because DRI had just played before them). The high light to this show was watching the members of DRI walking through the crowd with a full garbage can, throwing it at Discharge as they were playing. The band pretty much ran off the stage crying. At any rate, listening to this Skeptix ep for some reason reminds me of those times.

RF7 were a L.A. band fronted/started by childhood tv star Felix Alanis. The band didn't really sound like many of their other LA punk brothers. They had a more rockin oi skinhead sound. The band started their own record label(smoke seven), and put out most of their own releases, and many off their friends (redd kross, circle one, etc). I only own this and the bands first 12". They do an amazing cover of CCR's fortunate son on this ep.
I was turned onto these guys by Bones one of the S.F. skins in around 1985-86. I moved into the house many of these skins were living in on 603 Fell street. The place was a fort like barracks with bunks, and a huge projected screen tv. They were moving out as I was moving in, and our time overlapped by a week or two. Dudes were in a punk oi band called the Noise Boyz who I saw once. They were influenced by the likes of AC/DC, RF7, and Blitz. All they did was drink bad beer, fight, and listen to lots of AC/DC. When these skinheads out they left some records.. I was a lucky man.
