NOCTURNUS-s/t 7" ep(1993)

1. Posses the priest
2. Mummified

This ep was released just after the band had broken up, and even though there are only two songs on the ep, there is 10 mins worth of music.  These guys were one of the first death metal bands to incorporate a keyboard player both live and on records.   As any old metal heads out there remember key boards were a no no for most metal.  NO FUCKING KEYBOARDS!  When I first looked at their records I had the same thought. With these guys I always thought it worked pretty well though, as the themes of the songs were always pretty Sci-fi based, and it worked as cool back ground effects.  I was turned onto the band by Dave & Jack who owned Erl Records.  They would always call me up when new stuff came in, and throw stuff in the save drawer at their shop for me.  I first discovered Carcass, and Crossed Out through these guys and their Albany NY based record shop.  I picked up this bands first LP from them, and consistently kept buying other stuff from them that they released.  These dudes were total Technical death nerds, and influenced a slew of other death-tech bands.  The original line up included the first Morbid Angel drummer(who also sang).  Florida death metal will always have a place in my heart.

18.hang over

BP stood for Belching Penguins. Not the best name in the world, but worth a scoff and chuckle when you'd heard it slide off the tongue. Ridiculous and silly names were sorta the thing back then. These dudes were from Florida, and were as equally involved in building the scene there as their buddies No Fraud, and Pagan Faith. No fraud were prolly bigger, and definitely a bit more popular outside of Florida, but BP had a huge following as well locally. Both bands put their records out on No Clubs! Records.
This is one of those records that when it came out, and you were in the record shop looking at the cover(one of the coolest punk covers ever)... You flipped it over and saw that there were 18 songs, and you knew right then that you needed to buy this thrasher. The songs were fast and sloppy with yup silly and ridiculous song titles and lyrics.
I remember hearing the first song, with the drums, and the ride cymbal it just made me want to smash shit up. I wish I'd gotten to see these bros, it must have been a trip.

01.no fraud
02.social disease
03.aggression
04.killing time
05.political
06.f.t.m.y.i.y.d.
07.revolt

10.punks vs fags
11.identity crisis
12.d.u.i.
13.fake
14.venice hillbillies
15.no social cliques

This is a perfect demo tape. Seriously, not a clunker on it. I've been tripping on this one for many years, and It's just shocking to me that this demo is just a demo, and that it never became a full length LP. This stuff blows away 50% of the punk that was coming out in 1985, and 90% of what is coming out today. This tape is just chuck full of Eighteen generic hits. Perfect thrash played by these Florida punks. The songs are frantically played, but filled with hooks galore that just make you hum along like you've heard these rippers before(you have, its generic in that good way). I uploaded the bands 7" quite a while ago on here, and have been blasting both that and this demo a lot lately. The rip I did is missing the last three tracks.
I was lucky enough to acquire this tape from my good 'ol buddy Jim MacNaughton many moons ago. I think Jim got the tape when his old band Affirmative Action toured the U.S. and played with No Fraud in Florida? Whatever the case, its been a while since I've seen this dude, so thanks Jim, I'll see you at Devon's wedding bro.

HELLWITCH purveyor of fear 7" (1987)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1.purveyor of fear
2.pyrophoric seizure

This record was released in '89, but recorded in 1987. Pretty thrashing death metal stuff from these Florida metal pioneers. The band played tons of shows with the likes of DRI, COC, Agonostic Front, etc. In fact the bands first show in 1985 was with Florida's infamous punk band Roach Motel. Though these guys were heavily involved in the diy hardcore scene, they had a huge impact on Florida and underground metal. The production is raw as shit on this release as they recorded most of their early stuff in their living room. Both these songs can be found on the first LP, in a less raw more pro recording. I hear lots of Possessed and Death when I listen to this ep. Only 300 of these were pressed on flight nineteen records. This was heavily traded in the underground tape trading community of the 1980's. This makes takes me back to those days of trading with pen pals around the globe. Thought of this band after seeing a high school/metal buddy by the name of Dave Stevenson at the A7 reunion gig in NYC this past weekend. Dave hasn't changed at all and is still as metal as ever. We used to roam the back streets and malls of Latham NY back in the mid 80's smoking up, and blasting metal in the woods.

NO FRAUD s/t 7" (1986)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1.failure
2.don't let me grow old
3.thinking of you
4.wastecase
5.intro
6.nothing left inside
7.suicidal maniac
8.its all economic

No Fraud were a wicked fast diy hardcore band from Venice Florida, who played a skate styled punk that had no metal influences at all. I originally bought this record through the mail when I lived in Livermore, and would read MRR reviews, and scoured the pages for ads that caught my eye. I sadly sold the ep in my first purge of selling off parts of my record collection in the early 90's. I have no idea what I was thinking, and have been looking for it for years since then. Recently I was totally stoked to pick this up at the wfmu record fair in nyc, It made my day for sure.
Side two of this ep is amazing, totally blazing hc that reminds me in some ways of early RKL. The song wastecase on side one is great as well, bringing me back to my youth in the 80's. The band did some early demos that are fucking brilliant too. I'll post one of those someday on here as well. This is pretty rare, and came out on No Club records. Enjoy!
