BRAIN IMPLOSION-sandgrains 7"(1989)

1.sandgrains
2.intramural

Here is some more killer, under the radar thrash metal. This three piece band was formed by two brothers, in the Netherlands in 1987. Unfortunately They never recorded a LP or anything after this 7".
I found my copy in a used bin at some flea market on my first trip over to Europe, when the band I was in at the time(the Oath)toured over there. I think I paid a Guilder for it(before the Euro, so it was about .50 cents). I recall being pretty excited to get the record home(back to the U.S.)to listen to it.
I love the guitar sound, and the vocals on this one. It really is just straight up, no nonsense, no thrills thrash metal. If anyone has other info, or a demo by these guys I'd love to hear more about it. Enjoy!

V/A METAL CLOGS compilation LP (1982)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

01.Crossfire-crossfire
02.Impact-looking for trouble
03.Frankenstein-I sold my soul
04.Gilgamesj-heavy duty
05.Crossfire-real steel
06.Impact-drop dead
07.Crossfire-motorcycles
08.Gilgamesj-ticket to heaven
09.Frankenstein-lady luck
10.Crossfire-be crazy
11.Impact-misanthrope

Sticking with the spirit of Mixes, and compilations...this compilation was one of my first experiences with Dutch Heavy Metal. Three of the Four bands on this LP are from the Netherlands, the other(Crossfire)were from Belgium. The only band I went on to collect other records by were Crossfire. But thats only because I couldn't find stuff by the other bands. Crossfire records were easily found, I even have one uploaded some place here on this site(use the search function). This record has a very do it yourself look and feel, and had me falling in love with Gilgamesj as they sounded sort of like Dio era Rainbow. My favorite tracks on this comp are the Crossfire songs(especially "Motorcycles"), and Impact's "drop dead".
When a hardcore/punk band I was playing in toured, and recorded in Holland, I spent some time trying to track down the 7"s by Frankenstein, and Gilgamesj. I had no luck. Dutchies help a brother out with those. Please comment if you download.

SINISTER s/t 7" (1990)

1.compulsory resignation
2.spiritual immolation
3.putrefying remains

I really stopped paying attention to most death metal in around 1993. The production, and the sounds of most bands started to sound exactly the same, with almost no variations after a while. There didn't seem to be much new happening, 'cept maybe for the over use of drum triggers. I was turned onto early death metal through my early love of metal of course, but also it stemmed from the UK stench and crust scenes of the late 1980's, and was just sort of a gradual progression I think.
Sinister were from Holland, and definitely had that Possessed, Napalm Death, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse vibe going, but added their own twist to it. Pretty sure the bassist was like 15 years old on this release.
My old band Monster X was influenced heavily by this stuff. "cross the styx" blew our minds, and John def tried to sound vocally like this. Many years later, when I was recording a Oath record in Holland, I noticed Sinister records on the wall, and commented on them to the Engineer who went on to tell me they recorded there. I was stoked. I like to blast this in my headphones when I go to the gym. It pumps me up.

NOG WATT fear 7" (1985)

1.going on
2.wish you could feel
3.hunted
4.fear
5.big warning, big mistake
6.neighborhood watch

Okay, this is one of the earlier of the Dutch bands that I can recall hearing when I was a youngster, and discovering international punk(after BGK of course). The first tracks I heard by these "gals" was off a compilation LP called beware of the wolf in Sheep's clothing. I bought this 7" and the Indirekt 7" based on hearing both bands tracks on the LP. I must admit that I wasn't interested in hearing all that much punk/hardcore with female vox back then. To me, back then it sounded wimpy. I still recall Tim Yohannon comparing them to the Avengers in a record review he did for MR&R. Pretty sure this was an all female hardcore band, and man its fucking raging as hell(think Sacrilege UK mixed with Avengers). The music Moves from thrashy hardcore with killer melodic bass riffs, to slower and heavier Avengers meets Fang styled stuff. My favorite song is "fear", the first song on side two. Its a slowy, but a beauty. I think these girls helped me to realize females could play thrashy hardcore, and it wasn't just a boys game. I was a pretty close minded metalhead up until the mid 80's, so this was typical of guys like me at the time.
When I first went to Holland to tour with my then band das Oath, I recall trying to talk to the older punks like Henk, Rudolf and Noel about where the Nog Watt girls were today. We instead got drunk and I watching these guys circle pit in a basement to the Offenders, so I didn't get more info out of these guys about the band, other than "they were a bunch of dirty squatters". Typical Dutch humor, poking fun at my interest. "Big warning, big mistake" and "neighborhood watch" are sharing the same track (.05), as the songs go right into one another.

PICTURE diamonddreamer LP (1982)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
1.lady lightning
2.night hunter
3.hot lovin'
4.diamonddreamer
5.message from hell
6.you're all alone
7.lousy lady
8.the hangmen
9.get me rock and roll
10. you're touching me

Don't let the bad album cover fool you...
Pic were from the Netherlands, and were early legendary lords of the nwobhm sound. I believe they formed in around 1979-80. When I think of their sound, I think Maiden meets Dio! Yeah, almost that good man. The band influenced U.S. bands, English bands, heavy metal bands from everywhere. Its unreal to me how these guys have sorta been left out of metal (at least in the U.S. scene).
For me, when I think of Dutch music the first things that come to my mind are L'arm, BGK, Picture, & Golden Earing. This stuff is true, die hard heavy metal with great vox, and melodic heavy sizzling guitars. The drums just play hard and steady.
I was on tour in Europe some years ago with the Oath, and I bought a bunch of Picture stuff at some weird flea market in one of the city centers of Holland. Some of this bands records have always been tough to find in the U.S. Record shopping in Europe is amazing. So much metal, so many metal heads... dudes with lots of hair, bad mustaches, and leather vests buying some of the worst hard rock albums of all time. I love it, Long live metal.

HIGHWAY CHILE-story book heroes LP (1983)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

1.Carol
2.Jesse James
3.headbangers
4.endless trail
5.highway chile
6.going blind
7.run run
8.nothing you can do about it!

Named after a Hendrix song of course, These NWOBHM dudes were from The Netherlands, and were prolly the first Dutch band I had heard besides the likes of Golden Earing. This stuff Isn't gonna be for everyone, as its on the lighter more catchier side of metal. I was listening to them at the same time I was listening to Maiden, Priest, Scorps, Riot, Def Leppard, etc.
