I've been on a pretty good Japanese hardcore punk kick these days. Its due to the fact the Systematic Death are playing a few shows in the USA this week. I'll be here in Manhattan to witness the Japanese Brutality. They influenced almost all Japanese hardcore in some way or another.
At any rate Bastard are my all time favorite Japanese band ever. I love the gruff vocals, and the meaty guitar hooks played to an almost crusty powerful drumbeat. When We started Devoid Of Faith in 1992 we gravitated towards the Bastard Japanese sound. I love Bastard, thats all there is to it. I own two copies of the LP.
When Devoid Of Faith toured with 9 Shocks Terror we stayed with a long time heroic drummer friend of mine named Wedge. Wedge was showing off his record collection at his Moms house, pulling shit out of the attic, and selling us almost anything we wanted. This was of course pre Ebay days. Jim MacNaughton, Telfian, and myself were buying all kinds of goodies from Wedge. I think one of us got a Cause For Alarm 7" from him. The dude had dupes of everything and was the least greedy record nerd I think I've ever met. He was happy to share. Well that all changed when I fumbled across his Bastard 7" . I was in aw, and asking "how much how much, how muchhhhh!!!!" Wedge simply snatched it from my hands and said, "nope, this one ain't for sale Nate". He mentioned that it was special to him, and he didn't think he'd ever find another if he parted with it. I left it at that. A few years later I got a e mail from Erica Beck from Boi records in Japan. She had heard from Pushead that I was looking for this, and she had a extra one of eps at the shop. Next thing I know I've got a copy plus some og bastard shirts she'd sent in the mail. What a great gal. This goes out to her and her child in which I've heard she had in the last couple years. Cheers Erika!

  1. actually, it took me a while to get a copy of this ep...i used to trade stuff with your friend Louis back in the late 80's-early 90's; he was one of the only other people in the US who obsessed over this stuff like i did/still do...one of the last tape trades he & i did, he dubbed this just as he got it, in like late 1991 right after he returned from his ill-fated move to texas...i alraedy had their comp stuff, which i picked up while i was residing in Kyoto in the summer of 1989. never knew this ep existed until Louis taped it for me. took me until like 1994 to actually track one down. its the only copy ive ever had, and i still love it to this day. i guess im in the minority in that i feel their "controlled in the frame" 12" is kinda weak (in comparison to this ep) & pretty over-rated. its not bad, i just dont understand the "god" status that its gained over the years.ah well. just my opinion.

actually, i think you slept with this ep under your pillow with my Urban Waste ep cradled in your arms...whish i had a pic of that!!!

  4. Seriously man, your blog is my favorite. I love the stories and your writing style.
I also appreciate the music, the demos are my personal favorites, but I also love the obscure 7" records that you post. It makes me wish I still had a turntable.

  9. I had no idea this is so rare. I had 5 or 6 copies in my "slowest mailorder in the world" catalogue and I could hardly get rid of them, haha. well, maybe it was me and my policy of having everybody wait at least 1 year before they'd get their packages.

  10. I'd been searching for this from around 1993 on... It was my wetdream. way pre e bay

I'm not sure how rare it actually is, I just think everyone wants it making it a pretty high dollar record. Not sure what the pressing info on it is... Maybe Wedge or Brian Dropdead knows?

  11. a good pressing guess is 500 or 1000.i remember Louis once stating this was only 300?? maybee im hallucinating...

most japanese discs didnt command much more of a pressing than that way back then, although the Selfish label kept re-pressing their stuff in the late 80's at some cheap Korean pressing plant after the initial Japanese pressings sold out. anything on Selfish with hand-written matrix numbers & the square mylar inner bags with the grey-ish geometric patterns printed on them is a Korean pressing. supposedly these are upwards of 3-4000 copies pressed. also, the Korean pressing of Gauze "Equalizing Distort" has tan paper labels, as opposed to the Japanese ones which are white paper
