This one brings back some really positive memories for sure.
Kids for Cash were from Virginia, and had a strong 7 Seconds sound. I don't think the band did anything else after this kinda rare, and obscure ep. The sound really is melodic and posi. If your a metalhead you prolly won't be digging on this one "dude".
I ran into this ep totally by mistake in around 1987. I was home in Albany for Xmas or something from S.F., and had randomly heard a radio show by these two dudes on Siena College radio (88.3 WVCR). They played an entire side of the ep, then went on to inform me, the listener that the ep was, and had been sitting at Worlds records for a while, and that stupid hardcore punks needed to buy it, cos it was good. I borrowed my Moms car, and headed to the record store to see multiple copies of this(like 20). Back then one rarely thought of buying more than one copy of a record...even if it was only $2.75.
Years later I found out the D.J. on the radio that I had randomly heard was one of the singers of Wolfpack, and went on to become an Albany cop. A few more years went on, and he came into my comic book shop, and sold me a shit load of his punk records. I told him I found it humorous that a cop was selling me punk/hardcore records... He started showing me his tats. A Bunch of lazy crusty punks in the store were like "what the fuck is happening"?

  1. Great story man. Damn how lucky are you to meet the great Steve Reddy! Honestly, Wolfpack is the main reason why I got into hardcore and metal. His singing style was really snarlin and heavy. The band played some really tight music too. It really stood out from the other hardcore bands. Good shit man and thanks for putting this one up.

  3. wow. this is a surprising find. i was the guitar player in Kids For Cash. i'm glad you dig the e.p. and thanks for posting it, as i haven't heard it in years. i'm looking forward to listening to other records i've not thought of in ages, particularly RKL, Saint Vitus and Citizens Arrest.

    cheers,
    -sohrab.

p.s. your entries are exceptionally fun to read.

thanks for writing in the comment section. Its rad when that happens.

Any stories or info about the band people should know?

What do you do now? Do you keep track of current hardcore?
Any other records or recordings besides this one?

  5. hey nate,

the other KFC folks and i are long out of touch. i did hear from Dan, the bass player, about 2 years ago and he told me that he edits a weekly paper in Columbia, SC. he seemed pretty happy, so i assume he's still there.

i live with my wife and our young son in Brooklyn, NY, where i make music and do graphic design work.

Michael Hampton, the guitar player from SOA, the Faith and Embrace, lives around the corner from me and we collaborate on soundtracks together. indie films, pbs documentaries, etc. we are also working on a record with Scott McCloud and Alexis Fleisig, who were in Lünch Meat, Soulside and GvsB.

in October Eli Janney, another member of Girls Against Boys, and Geoff Sanoff, who i played with in a 90s indie rock band called Edsel, are recording an album by my new band, Obits, that we're doing for Sub Pop. the other guitar player in our group is Rick Froberg, who was in Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes.

anyway, thanks for indulging this biographical rambling. without running on much more, i will say that somewhere there is a Kids For Cash cassette floating around that predated the 7" -- if i find it, i will be sure to digitize it and get you a copy.

    cheers,
    -sohrab.

p.s. comical footnote: Dave Grohl played drums in KFC very briefly and i have a very distinct memory of a show i put on at a suburban Virginia community center, where we opened for 7 Seconds, and how thunderstruck those guys were by his totally manic and fierce pounding.

  6. hey nate,

earlier tonight i found a CD that has the first KFC tape on it.

i'd forgotten that Chris Bonner, our original drummer, had burned me a copy about 6 years ago.

i've no idea what the quality of the 7 songs is like, but i'd be happy to make mp3s and send them your way.

if you're interested, just give me an email address or ftp info where i can post the stuff.

    cheers,
    -sohrab.

  8. I actually went to school at the University of South Carolina, own the Kids for Cash ep, and knew Dan the bass player somewhat well during my time there. I actually worked in a record store he co-owned in the mid-late '90s. I have this memory of Dan bringing up a VHS copy of a DC/Virginia community center show with Kids for Cash and Mission Impossible, I think. Good times.

  9. Great to see this. I was at many kids for cash shows in Burke, VA. I have the original demo, but not the ep.

  10. Great blog, great band and great comments! Thanks for all the free entertainment – kinda like the old days when it was about the sharing not the cash.
