Mace were from Washington State, and formed in 1985. This is the bands second LP and came out on Black Dragon records. Rumor has it that guitarist Hills was friends with and later produced such acts as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice and chains etc. Don't let that scare you, as this is some humorous, monster speed metal with heavy punk influences(the vocals mostly). It turned off most punks cos of its shredding solos, and turned off many metal heads due to its punk styled approach to the singing.
A band I was in that started in 1989 called Intent stole our name from a partial song title of these guys. I recall bringing the name Intent to Kill to a band practice (after snaking it off of the back cover of this record), and having the band decline the name but somehow shortening it to Intent. If the link takes you to a dead page when you click it, try copy and pasting the link. I'm just switching over to mediafire and still learning...

  6. These guys were actually around before '85 as a more traditional metal act. I saw them open for Slayer and Metal Church at the Pine St Theater in Portland in the summer of 1984. Back then they were a three-piece. Later the crossover thing stared, Kirk switched to vocals and they adopted the sound heard here. I saw these guys again playing with The Accused in the Fall of '85 and things had changed up a bit. It was at an art gallery in downtown Seattle -- no stage and complete mayhem! I have an audio recording and at one point Kirk handed me the microphone so I could give my best "Gutripper!" scream to introduce that song.

Fun band, and thanks for the post. I still have "Process of Elimination" on vinyl, but had not heard this album previously.

  7. Another fan seeking MACE "Process of Elimination". MACE were brilliant in their own way, and way ahead of their time. I'll check back. Thanks!

  9. Guitarist Dave Hillis did go on to quite a few other things, including a succesful career as an engineer for some of the Big Name bands. He was also in Sybil Vane and Thee Heavenly Music Experience. Excellent guitarist, no doubt about it, I've seen him perform more times than I can count and he never disappoints.

  10. I recently found a copy of this on vinyl, and I am loving it even though I feel like I shouldn't be...if that makes sense. Glad to see that there are others out there who appreciate the strange awesomeness of the record.

  15. This needs to be remastered and on cd. That's alls I'm zayin'. Anyway, I first bought this cassette tape in 1985 in the really late summer I believe. It was my FIRST listen to a band that was punk/metal/speed metal/metal core/crossover...whatever; it was punk speed with metal in there. And it was fast! In 1985 I didn't know about C.O.C. That is because I live in the Antelope Valley and we were very late on these releases here. The A.V. is in the middle as one travels from L.A. to Mojave. In the middle. Anyway, I bought this at The Warehouse and bought it because it was on Restless or something Enigma or some label I had to trust. I was floored by it. I usedta put this tape on my huge boombox in the back of my mustang, parked in the desert and armed with Tommy's chili cheese fries and two sixers of Mickey's Malt liquor for me and my friend Joe. He dug the tape just I did because we never heard punk speed with metal leads. We just tripped out on that! Anyway, MACE's first record was and will always be a special recording for me. Taking me back to wonderful times in the 1980's and wonderful soundtracks to it all; MACE being part of it. Thanks to everyone in the band in creating great memories that last forever! THANK YOU MACE!

  16. Process of Elimination was the first cassette I ever got that melted Hardcore Punk and Metal together. I bought this cassette in 1985 and was immediately blown away! It became standard listening on Saturday afternoons, after WWF Wrestling, in the mid afternoon, at the desert, with my best friend, armed with Mickie's Malt Liquor, and Tommy's Chili Cheese Fries in summer 1985! Those were the best of time for us right after High School and right before College. MACE!!! Along with so many other bands I had on cassette, they were different in that they had that metal edge with the punk speed they were playing. Damn!!! That was a great Summer!!!! Great 5 Star album. I will always love this record!!!!
