I saw Psycho in Albany in 1989 with Sheer Terror and Stigmata. Pretty sure that when I saw Psycho these guys they had lost the singer, and were a three piece perhaps? I recall the drummer by this time was wearing a head phone set with a microphone that allowed him to sing and play drums at the same time. It was a weird thing to see a hardcore band do. I was sorta turned off at first when I saw them setting up, but once they started playing their wacky brand of fierce thrashcore I knew they were awesome. I bought their record at the show due to their speed and tightness. I recall the Troy kids who came to the show sorta standing there and not knowing how to react to Psycho.
After the show my friends who put on the show went to pay the bands, and were short the guarantee that Sheer Terror were promised. S.T. got pissed and started saying stuff like "Why don't we ask your mommy for the money". They got pretty demanding, and if I recall correctly drove my buddies to an ATM so that they could be payed what they were promised. The entire episode was pretty hilarious.
The second song on this tape sounds like a different band(different vox, and poppy sorta). The other songs are killer thrash songs that sorta remind me of Poison Idea vocally.

This is some top notch,tech savvy and intricate thrash metal that some what borders on death metal. The band were from Poland and should make my friends, "the Krak brothers"(Jason and Jared Krak) quite proud of their Polish heritage. This is the bands second release, and you can tell the music is a bit different from the first record as the band had a line up change, loosing both the singer and bass player. I actually prefer this record to the first, and absolutely love the song "i spit in your face", its seriously so brutal, and makes me want to spit in peoples faces.
I originally got my copy of this record from a friend I grew up with and played music with in Latham NY. Mark S. played bass in Horrid Blessing, and was someone whom I'd discovered, and enjoyed lots of underground metal with in the early to mid 1980's. Mark went on to join the marines, and before he was deployed to the first Gulf war he gave me some of his metal records.
A fond memory I have of Mark is him asking me to go to his recruiters with him before being deployed because he was "nervous". Of course it was sort of a ploy to try an get me to join up with him. I went with my buddy not having any idea he was trying to get me involved. When we got there The recruiter asked me what I did for a living.... I told him I was a plumber. His response was "Nathan, we have plumbing in the marines, I can make you a journeymen in 3 years". My response was simple, "what, digging shit holes to use for toilets in the sand?" The conversation was over.

What's pretty incredible to me, and many a hardcore punk record collectors is what had happened to, and why the Rock O Rama Record label went from releasing amazing punk records in the early 1980's, to then releasing white power stuff such as Skrewdriver, Brutal Attack, etc? Its mind boggling really. The early stuff on the label was this sorta obscure scandi-German noisy punk rock that even to this day is influencing newer and younger punk bands from around the globe. Stosstrup were one of those raw noisy punk bands. Other early releases include Skeptix, Ohl, Bastards, Razors, Appendix, Tarveet Kadet, Riistetyt, etc.
When I moved to the city, and gas prices started going through the roof, I made the decision to trade an old classic muscle car for some old and classic punk records. I made a weird record trade with My friend Dan, who back in the late 80's-90s was known in Albany as "Gerber Skin"(because of his baby like appearance). As a collector I'd traded records many a times, but Dan was interested in something else. Yup, a 1967 dodge dart GT that I had owned, and was just letting it sit to collect dust and mold. We made the trade, I ended up with this tasty slab of wax that came out out on the Rock O Rama Label. I ended up with a bunch of skinhead rock n roll records. Dan ended up with my car and a Slayer tape in the tape deck. He later painted the car and made a brother proud. It was a good trade for the both of us.
The cover art on this record always looked so brutal to me. I was so happy to finally have it.

This post is inspired by my excitement of seeing Motorhead again in Sept. at Roseland in NYC.
Warfare are a crossover fans wet dream for sure. They were able to take the best parts of bands such as Tank, Motorhead, and Venom, throw them in a blender and out came a raw, catchy metal infused Discharged style punk band. It's seriously beautiful man. The song "total Armageddon" is a classic rager for sure, and always has me playing air drums for the entire 6 minutes of the song. I guess the band suffered from non popularity, or rather, obscurity due to the Drummer doing the lead vox. This really was a no no back then, and Seemed to really kill it for any metal band in the 80's who tried this task. The drummer/vocalist's name was Evo, and he was also in such punk bands as the Blood, Major Accident, and the Angelic Upstarts.
This is the bands first full length, and it was produced by Tank's Algy Ward. Most metal heads I knew growing up had a certain disdain for Warfare. I'm not really sure why, perhaps the rawness, and the Discharge styled drumming wasn't always metal enough for certain purists. What ever the case this shit is noisy, loud and raw. This post is inspired by a comment(and e mail conversations)I had with scab R.K.L. bassist "Ricky", who played with the band after Vince and before Joe. Ricky informed me that he also helped form and played with Stalag 13, but left right before they recorded the 12".
This got me thinking about the record, and pursued me to listen to it again after more then a decade.
I think Its easy to tell they were influenced by 7 Seconds, and Minor Threat. Its also easy to tell that Uniform Choice must have been pretty influenced by Stalag 13. You know, The vocals being sung in that high pitched screaming manner, with the catchy, melodic, fast music just brings it all together.
I own two copies of this nowadays, but I bought my original copy at the Record Vault on Polk street in S.F. This was a record that Andy from Attitude Adjustment pushed on me. It didn't take much to push, I was already into the cover art work. I had no idea who the Hernandez Bros. were back then, so this was my introduction to their cartoony comic book style of art. I went on to follow their careers in the comic book industry, and their book "Love and Rockets" pretty much turned me on to other underground, or more Adult themed comics.

My wife and I have recently been looking at perhaps moving from Brooklyn NY to the wonderful state of NJ. I figured I'd pay some respect to the godawful state of NJ on this wonderful 4th of July by posting some bad, yet obscure NJ hardcore.
Seriously though... I now know where West Orange is because we looked at houses there, and the address where this 12" was recorded was in an area I'd recently been while driving around.
I just got a copy of this record after selling all my Bedlam stuff in the early 1990's, due to some song they had about A.i.d.s. Yup, I was sort of a pc dickhead for sure. The song was stupid, and isn't on this record, so I have no idea what I was thinking. I guess I took my hardcore pretty seriously back then.
I first heard these guys in maybe 1986, when a neighbor/friend in San Fran named Eric Meade made me the best mix tape I think I've ever heard. The tape featured at least 4 songs each by the likes of Jerrys Kids, CIA, Reagan Youth, the Bad Brains, FU's, Sacred Denial(the good LP songs), 76% Uncertain, Void, Beastie Boys, SSD, and yup... Bedlam. I liked the band for their dirgy style, and the harsh production that you could tell was recorded and mixed by someone that had no idea what to do with the bands sound, so hey, lets add some reverb!
This record has everything you need, fast parts, slow mosh parts, and some weird psych stuff mixed in as well.
I hadn't seen this Friend Eric in almost 20 years, and was wondering about what ever happened to him. I went to Amoeba Records with my pal Matt Average, and Average starts asking me, "hey man, wasn't that guy in C2D"? I looked and was like...holy shit!!! I walked up and asked him if he used to live off of Fell street in S.F, and told him who I was. It was so weird, and very cool. Eric had really made a huge impact on me 20 years earlier, and I'd been wanting to tell him that.

Sticking with the spirit of Mixes, and compilations...this compilation was one of my first experiences with Dutch Heavy Metal. Three of the Four bands on this LP are from the Netherlands, the other(Crossfire)were from Belgium. The only band I went on to collect other records by were Crossfire. But thats only because I couldn't find stuff by the other bands. Crossfire records were easily found, I even have one uploaded some place here on this site(use the search function). This record has a very do it yourself look and feel, and had me falling in love with Gilgamesj as they sounded sort of like Dio era Rainbow. My favorite tracks on this comp are the Crossfire songs(especially "Motorcycles"), and Impact's "drop dead".
When a hardcore/punk band I was playing in toured, and recorded in Holland, I spent some time trying to track down the 7"s by Frankenstein, and Gilgamesj. I had no luck. Dutchies help a brother out with those. Please comment if you download.

Gibbed were a Japanese Death/grindcore band, and to my knowledge only released this ep along with a split with the Japanese band Multiplex. I know very little about Gibbed, although there are rumors that it was CFDL, & SOB members. Sort of doubtful if you ask me. The songs are rough, raw, and fierce, with very little care about production. This is my second copy, bought it from a friend recently for a price I couldn't pass up. My other copy is home at Moms, so this was perfect to buy and throw up on the site.
In the early 1990's I was in a straightedge grindcore band who were influenced by everything from Bolt Thrower, Brutal Truth, Sinister, Fear Of God, S.O.B., Napalm Death, Citizens Arrest, and yup, you guessed it Gibbed. My buddy Devon and I pushed John to approach is vox in the way the gibbed vocalist did. We def also loved the cover art work(I think it shows in the Human Greed split). I originally got my copy of this from my buddy Roger(the ex vocalist in my band Intent).

DAM(Destruction And Mayhem) were one of the better English thrash metal bands. Unfortunately they missed the boat by about 6 years, and were playing pretty typical speed/thrash metal years after its popularity. Kind of cool I guess as they weren't worried about trends I guess, and wanted to just play speed metal? I think most metal heads at this time were sort of getting more into death metal, sort of leaving the thrash scene to rot away for a while. When I listen to this I hear Testament, Flotsom and Jetsom, Defiance, post Baloff Exodos, and second tier German stuff like Vendetta.
This is the sort of stuff that gets me thinking about my high school metal buddies and me, listening to stuff that sounded like this in a car rides to house parties, where we would later destroy homes, steal booze, then leave to party amongst "our own kind". Listening to this has erupted those memories. Just sort of funny that this stuff came out 6 years after I graduated(when I was no longer doing that shit).
This post is dedicated to one of my best friends as a teenager, Gene Koreman Who I hitch hiked, drank with, smoked with, played music with, and fought with.... Gene lost his mother yest. She was an awesome lady, and let me hang out their home as though it was my own house. She was always filled with good advice. RIP

What can I say, this is where I first heard New Jersey's Hades. Most the bands on here were from Jersey, and one of them from NY. The bands are pretty obscure, and prolly aren't all to relevant to many people(cept for maybe Hades). The bands did however have a impact on me. The Sneak Attack song "ultrasonic metal" is brilliant. I can listen to that song over and over and over. Its epic.
This record came out during the time in metal when strange things were happening. You had Nwobhm style bands trying to jump ship, and start playing faster, and heavier because it was sorta easy to see that that was the future of metal. I think you can sorta hear that in most these bands on this comp, they are semi stuck in a weird metal purgatory.
I'm sorta shocked that I bought this record because the cover art is just so awful. Back then the cover was helpful in selling me a record. Today I think the cover is bad, in a good way. Its funny, and made me laugh when I pulled it out after years of neglect.
The Tortured Dog song "can't run from evil" has a few skips in it. I kept it on anyways, because its a awesome song. Please comment.

These guys formed in the late 70's under the name Leviathan. The NWOBHM band were formed in England, and They changed their name when they recorded this ep. This is the only release under this name, although they once again changed their name, this time to Wolf for the release of an LP in which I don't think actually ever came out.
This 7" is awesome, and will keep your head bopping along. I lucked into this ep again totally accidentally(or rather just took a chance). Pretty obscure stuff, this rarity will not disappoint. Enjoy and comment please!

Hellhammer was of course pre Celtic Frost and hailed from Switzerland. I'd never heard of any music coming out of the country at the time. Both bands had a huge impact on both the black metal scene(which really was pretty non existent at the time), and doom metal. The only other bands I can recall being this "evil" at the time would have been Venom, Mercyful Fate, Bathory, and Slayer. It's also pretty amazing to hear what an impact these dudes had on the crust punk scene.

It was probably the same all over America, but In my high school during the early to mid 1980's there weren't all to many kids who were keen on underground music. I'm dating myself for sure, but back then you really only had three to four different cliques. You had your Jocks, Preps, Heads(or burnouts), and then the weirdos who didn't fit in anywhere. The later were usually like super smart nerds, or weird artfags(some of whom were punk rockers). I was a metalhead for sure, and most my friends were burnouts who hung out in the smoking area between classes, and during lunch and free periods. The music most of these kids were listening to was stuff like Zepplin, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, etc. There was a small group of us at Shaker that were digging on Newer and more underground metal. Stuff like Exodus, Slayer, Metallica, DRI, COC, Destruction, Venom, etc. Not only did the rest of the school think we were freaks, but the heads we were chillin with thought we were sorta fucked up, and couldn't grasp the music. I recall first discovering Hellhammer, and sort of liking it, but then hearing "triumph of death" and being like, this is noise. "I could play this" I thought to myself. There was a kid I recall, I think his name was Mike Kinny. Mike walked around school with a huge Celtic Frost back patch on his denim jacket. Imagine that in 1984-85. Dude was sort of a loner for sure. So cool...

Well, I purchased this record originally thinking it was the Subhumans U.K. , I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there were more than just one Subhumans. The band I accidentally found out were Canadian.
The music on this LP is so fucking poppy and catchy that it makes you want to dance and sing. Its a flawless punk record from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, its still raw and punk as fuck. The lyrics are very political and to me at the time were pretty meaningful. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hear this in 1980 when it originally came out. I didn't catch it til around 1986 when it was repressed on cd records. When you think about the fact that this came out in 1980, its sorta unreal. The band was very much ahead of their time.
I've always said that the Templars totally stole these guys sound. I'm okay with that... I love both bands. Seriously give this a spin and tell me yo don't hear the Templars and maybe even some Leatherface.

Found this one about a year after it came out at World's Records. I'd moved back to Albany from the Bay Area, and I'd scour the 3 record stores in my area looking for odd and obscure hc gems. I had absolutely no idea what this band sounded like, but loved the back cover cartoon art work, and the first song on the back cover was a version of "ready to fight". The LP looked like a demented straightedge record. I was pleasantly surprised by the hard sounding, yet intricate jazz styled hardcore these bros played. Right away the record reminded me of the first Die Kreuzen LP, although the PHC stuff was much more bass riffy and heavy. Eric Wood played the monster 4 string beast on this record, and he of course he later went on to form Neanderthal, and Man Is The Bastard. You can really hear those two bands in these phc recordings. Dude practically invented West Coast Powerviolence.
When MITB finally did tour the east Coast a few of us Albany folk followed them around to a few shows like they were the Grateful Dead or something. I can recall talking to Wood in Providence RI, and him telling me he loved my band DOF,using words like "that's some bombastic shit man", "you cats make me dizzy", and "come out West baby". I gushed to the dude about how much I loved PHC, and wished they weren't so short lived.

There are only Three songs on this 12"ep, but they're all special if you're a die hard Sodom fan. Ausgebombt is done in German here, and the vocals done this way really make this sound punk as shit. The song originally came out on the agent orange LP, but was done in English there, so this is a little treat. Next up is "don't walk away" which is a Tank cover, and also sounds different from the LP version. Last up is an excellent live track, that is spot on, and sounds like a metal fueled blur. You know... a whirlwind, the way Sodom usually sound.
This Band were gods to me in the 1980's along with Destruction, and Kreator. listening to them gets me thinking about high school and how much I hated every aspect of it. Bands like this helped to create an escape for me.

This is a perfect demo tape. Seriously, not a clunker on it. I've been tripping on this one for many years, and It's just shocking to me that this demo is just a demo, and that it never became a full length LP. This stuff blows away 50% of the punk that was coming out in 1985, and 90% of what is coming out today. This tape is just chuck full of Eighteen generic hits. Perfect thrash played by these Florida punks. The songs are frantically played, but filled with hooks galore that just make you hum along like you've heard these rippers before(you have, its generic in that good way). I uploaded the bands 7" quite a while ago on here, and have been blasting both that and this demo a lot lately. The rip I did is missing the last three tracks.
I was lucky enough to acquire this tape from my good 'ol buddy Jim MacNaughton many moons ago. I think Jim got the tape when his old band Affirmative Action toured the U.S. and played with No Fraud in Florida? Whatever the case, its been a while since I've seen this dude, so thanks Jim, I'll see you at Devon's wedding bro.

This London Based NWOBHM group formed in 1980, and immediately started recording demos, and then released this, the bands first ep on Neat. This is more straight up hard edged rock n roll inspired metal, via the likes of Sledgehammer, etc. Remember that bands back then had different influences then later metal. I'd guess these dudes were heavily influenced by early AC/DC and Kiss. "Always ready" is the title track, but the real ripper for me is the b side tune. It's hard for me to believe that these guys are still together today.
I was exposed to them in around 1982-83 when I saw this ep at a Strawberry's records and tapes. The girl on the cover prolly drew me in, getting my little 15 year old heart racing, and my hormones going crazy. The record set me up to later on purchase the bands "predator" LP.

Dead are not dead, and amazingly are still around today. This death/grind band are from Germany and play the hilariously grotesque style known as "pornographic gore grind"(though they are more on the death metal end of things musically). The lyrics are totally ridiculous, and definitely written to offend. The songs are all about twisted brutal sex acts that to most people would seem pretty sexist for sure(if one actually cares). This is the bands second ep, I'm Pretty sure they released a few demo tapes before the eps. Musically Dead remind me of Dying Fetus meets Bolt Thrower(the drums man, the fucking drums). This era of death metal is at the end of an amazing peak. '93 really seems to be like the last year of this style in which I was still paying any attention. After '92, '93 bands were just over produced, sounding the same, and triggering their drums just for fucks sake. Dead at this time were raw, and heavy as shit.
Listening back to this ep sorta takes me back... I can recall sitting around a few years ago in Albany with my old house mates/band mate John and Nick Crud Bomb, joking about this band, and other bands with the "porno gore" lyrics. I mean look at the cover... totally awesomely stupid.

I bought this one on a whim in Long Island on a record shopping spree I was on with my buddies Artie and Ron.
The band as you could probably guess play a pretty awesome style of doom/death metal. Most the songs are played heavy and slow, with some sudden bursts of speed thrown in here and there. I'd say they are a pure mixture of Incantation and Grief. Semi Obscure shit for sure, these dudes were from Riverside NJ. This is their second demo, they also released a few 7"s, but broke up in around 1996. Cool stuff for sure.

TOKYO BLADE powergame 7" (1983)

Tokyo Blade were a second tier nwobhm band that were formed in 1982 in the UK. The band was wicked melodic, sort of power metalish, yet with a tinge of rawness(on the first 3 7"s at least). This is the bands third release, and third single. You definitely get a sense that these guys were influenced by the likes of Maiden. I'd say they heard them, and decided to form Tokyo Blade. I don't know to many friends that dif or dug these guys cept myself, Jeff Jellen, and maybe "dirty" Ron Gramaldi.
Another record I purchased at the Strawberry's records and tapes in Guilderland NY. I'm guessing the band photo on the back cover persuaded me to buy this ep. I think I liked these guys so much, that I bought both the LPs that followed this ripping single. This is the kind of stuff I'd blast on my shit little stereo after getting out of school. Blast a few songs of nwobhm, go out and burn one in the woods, come back in blast a bit more metal and then eat a box Coco Puffs, Captain Crunch, or Quisp.

I feel like I should be posting some metal cause I'm going to see Saxon tonight. Fuck it, I've been listening to this hardcore tasty platter all weekend.
Cheetah Chrome Motherfuckers were maybe the 3rd or 4th Italian Band I'd ever heard. I think my initial exposure to them was from the almighty "peace compilation" dbl LP in 1985 or '86. They were also featured on a number of tape comps that I recall being passed around and traded back then. By the time I was getting into these guys, the 7"s were already sorta hard to find, and long out of print. The singer was supposedly a maniac live, cutting himself up and shit. When I got this LP the pictures on the inside sleeve made the dude look seriously sick. This was the sorta band I wanted to see live. I had already seen Raw Power at the farm, but I was dying to see CCM, the Wretched and Negazione live. Italy was the shit in the early to mid 80's. As I recall many die hards were sorta let down by this LP, not me, It's fierce and noisy.
This album got pumped alot in Niskuyana NY in 1989. I had just moved back to Albany from SF and had made friends with a bunch of punks that actually "got it". Most the other people I'd met were like NYC moshcore fanatics that seemed more interested in the violence or fighting at shows rather then the community, and the music. I'm talking about my friends, NIck, Mike J, Damon Douglas, Steve Watts, Neil Grimmer, Luke, Roger, Adam O'tool, Josh Baker, and Kevin O Sullivan. These dudes actually "got it". We would party at Damon's parents pad, listening to good music, smoking the hookah, and planning on how we would "take over" the local hardcore scene. This album was a sound track to that friendship, and those hang outs. If I recall correctly Damon bought like three copies of this LP from Timojhen at Blacklist Mailorder? Any how that is how I ended up with my first copy.

RAVEN hard ride 7" (1981)

Raven were the shit to me in the early 80's. They were a three piece with two brothers playing bass and guitar(the Gallagher Bros.). They formed in New Castle I think in around 1976. They started off as part of the NWOBHM scene in the late 70's into the early 80s, and then moved more into the speed metal vein, even touring with Metallica(when they were still gods). I Definitely think these guys were underrated and helped to create speed metal. I mean come on man, the Rock until you drop LP was released in '81, and was crucial for the time period. I don't think Bands like Kreator would have even formed if it weren't for shit like this. Its hard to fathom why people don't give these guys the credit they deserve. I mean I get it...Unfortunately they put out a bunch of really bad records after the almighty "all for one" LP.
When I hear the screams during "crazy world", it makes me fucking happy, and I wanna lose it. Early on though, when they were on Neat Records and putting out singles, they really had a punk type attitude, and look to them. The logo was so awesome looking. This is about as as These dudes were one of those UK bands that made me discover, and kept me buying the Neat Records eps. I could usually find them at Strawberry's Records and Tapes in Colonie NY. I'd have posted the 1st single instead of this one, but its already on another blog I follow. These songs both later came out on Rock until you drop. Enjoy.

I was turned onto the Detonators by the guitar player of Operation Ivy in perhaps 1986-87. The Dude was known as Lint back then, and was at almost every punk show in the Bay Area back then. I can recall him always buzzing around the audience at Gilman Street and just chatting it up with fellow punks. Lint had a true love for the scene back then, it was obvious when you talked to him. In one conversation I had with him about older California punk bands, he mentioned the Detonators. He gasped in aw when I told him I'd never heard them, and then went on to tell me that how his band was hugely influenced by them more than any other bands.
I later bought this LP at a record shop in Livermore California, and realized I had actually seen the Detonators at the Farm.
The Detonators started off as an L.A. punk band, then moved to Portland Oregon. When I listen back to this I can hear some skinhead influence on the band. Side 2 has riffs that really do seem stolen by op iv. Enjoy the core.

Holocaust and Mythra would be my two favorite "under the radar" New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands(meaning I'm not including the obvious Iron Maiden, etc). These kids really thought they were part of a movement, though this movement didn't have much of a social or political agenda(like punk). Dudes just wanted to bring metal to the masses, and have fun playing great music and partying hard.
This ep includes four songs recorded live in 1980. The sound is amazing, and one can see how people had become excited about these guys. You can also hear the influence these young gents had on the likes of Metallica. The guitar solos at the end of the ep on breakdown were ripped by Metallica for sure. People always mention Diamond Head when talking about Metallica, I hear Holocaust. I spin this one often as you can tell by the rip. There is also video from this show that is pretty amazing. Its available on Dvd, I've seen it on Netflix oddly enough. The lyrics to death and glory are simply amazing....Enjoy.

SINISTER s/t 7" (1990)

I really stopped paying attention to most death metal in around 1993. The production, and the sounds of most bands started to sound exactly the same, with almost no variations after a while. There didn't seem to be much new happening, 'cept maybe for the over use of drum triggers. I was turned onto early death metal through my early love of metal of course, but also it stemmed from the UK stench and crust scenes of the late 1980's, and was just sort of a gradual progression I think.
Sinister were from Holland, and definitely had that Possessed, Napalm Death, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse vibe going, but added their own twist to it. Pretty sure the bassist was like 15 years old on this release.
My old band Monster X was influenced heavily by this stuff. "cross the styx" blew our minds, and John def tried to sound vocally like this. Many years later, when I was recording a Oath record in Holland, I noticed Sinister records on the wall, and commented on them to the Engineer who went on to tell me they recorded there. I was stoked. I like to blast this in my headphones when I go to the gym. It pumps me up.
