Witchfinder General-death penalty (1982)
1. Invisible Hate
2. Free Country
3. Death Penalty
4. No Stayer
5. Witchfinder General
6. Burning a Sinner
7. R.I.P.
Formed in around 1978 in England, Witchfinder General could be classified as one of the original NWOBHM bands, with heavy Sabbath/doom influences. Some of the riffs are straight up Sabbath riffs that cause you to go "wait I know that song". I'd say they take the best elements of early Sabbath musically, and have more of an early Motley Crue vocal style. It works well. My favorite song on this full length is "free country", It was a theme as a high schooler, who was bored in the burbs.
"Free Country"
Reality it is a lie
The briefest dream before I die
To comprehend the cosmic scheme
See the truth behind my dream
Look out for me
Let's trip on L.S.D.
Look out for me
D.S. look out for me
Rocky's gold, leb is red
Black goes right to my head
Mushroom tea, and token weed
Amphetamine is real good speed
Look out for me
Come have some mushroom tea
Look out for me
D.S. look out for me
Lines of speed on a mirror face
Sniff it up through a biro case
Heroin is for the hero
It's a killer, you gotta say no
Look out for me
Let's trip on L.S.D.
Look out for me
D.S. look out for me
Turn to drugs to free my mind
Just to see what I would find
Tabs are great, now ask the drummer
Smack my friend is just a bummer

One of the best NWOBHM bands ever!
ReplyDeleteI always liked Death Penalty better then Friends of Hell. I don't know why. I wish you would've shown the front cover of Death Penalty, but I guess you don't need some irate anti heavy metal parent threatening you w/obscenity charges, or exposing minors to porn or whatever they'd threatened you with. Thanks for re-aquinting me with an old lost friend!
ReplyDeleteWitchfinder General was Britain and the N.W.O.B.H.M. movement's contribution to Doom Metal. And they play Doom Metal very very wail. You can hear Black Sabbath's mourful doom-ridden influence all over this classic slab. the songs are intense focused wails of sorrowful doom, and it's fantastic. It also has one of the more interesting album covers of any N.W.O.B.H.M. artists
